i am confused on my code. it is supposed to be a 326. the engine code is: 9793079G. the nearest thing i found was a 68 and a 69 350. the 3 might be a 0 and the g may be a ???. any help appreciated. oh ya, the heads are 17's. what kind of hp. should i expect? what heads would work better??

There are several numbers that you need to look for to ID your engine.

1. Block casting number, visible on rear of block behind passenger side cylinder head, raised cast digits.

2. Engine production number and engine code. Stamped digits on front face of block, just under passenger side cylinder head.

3. Block casting date, located on pad below distributor. Not easily viewed with distributor in car.

4. On later years, engine partial VIN, front face of block on raised pad next to timing cover, behind lower radiator hose.

From the info you posted, it might be a 1968 350 2bbl. rated at 265HP with small valve heads. If it's from a Firebird, code should be WC and should be mated to a 3 speed manual, or a YJ with a 2 speed auto. Same engine was also used in A body as WD or YN.

Heads should be okay, cam, intake and carb could be upgraded for more power.

#17 heads are small valve.

#16's are big valve.

He's absolutely right on the #17s...I checked four sources and all said small valve except the ONE I looked at this morning. I should know better...

Those that gave CC or compression ratio indicated 72cc/9.2:1, which should be okay for street. Small valve may still be okay for street for a 350.

the manifold is pontiac and it has a 600 holley and cam is???. if it is a 350, should i be looking for some 16's? i will be putting on a 200 4r tranny. the car is at the shop now being put together so i havent been able to get block #'s yet
