The fairly new clutch on my '68 400 is slipping. The Flywheel area where the clutch disc meets is relieved about 1/8" and I'm wondering if I have the wrong Flywheel (it came from a junkyard). New flywheels I see for a '68 are totally flat; but I saw one for a '64 that had this relief.
Anybody know if I have a clutch/flywheel mismatch? If so, can I just replace the clutch set?
Just like rotors and drums, the flywheel needs to be trued up on a lathe, provided that there is enough material on the flywheel to machiene it. A competent machience shop will be able to tell you whether or not it can be machiened.
I know that the surface engaged by the clutch disc must be flat. But, as I mentioned, I saw a NEW flywheel for a '64 Pontiac that had that flat surface relieved a little lower than the rest of the flywheel. Just wondering if I buy a clutch kit for a '64 (cheaper than buying a new flywheel), than I'd be OK?
