The previous owner of my car neglected to tell me that one of the water pump bolts was broken off inside the housing. I noticed it when I had a nice puddle of coolant under my car last week. I got the water pump off and tried to remove the broken bolt with an easy out. I managed to break the easy out and now it is stuck inside the hole I drilled in the broken bolt. I now have to drill through the easy out. I have tried new cobalt and titanium tipped drill bits and they don't work at all. What else can I use to drill through the easy out?
The easy out is made from solid carbide. Almost nothing else will drill into it. You might want to try a carbide drill, then be prepared to remove the timing cover and either EDM the bolt or replace the cover.
they do make little easy-outs for extracting broken easy outs. I've in the past used small die-grinder with a cone shape metal bit. its a pain but if your careful you can get it out.. may have to repair some threads..
Thanks for the replies. I did finally get the easy out and bolt out. However, I broke the ear off the timing cover in the process. Now I guess I will be asking around to see if anyone has a timing cover. At least this happened at the end of the driving season.
Vince, what year? The 68 and older timing covers need to be grabbed off e-bay. They seem to show up from time to time (though I haven't seen any lately). They usually go for less than $100. 69 and up can be had new from Ames for about $130.
