anyone done this on a 67-8? where can I get parts? i see parts at yearone for 69+ cars. I'd like to try to save money by rebuilding it if I can. I think at least the lower bearing is bad, but I haven't disassembled it or any other column.
-oh, this is a non-tilt, column shift automatic car
it binds on the shifter occasionally causing a loud snapping noise. I noticed the shifter wiggles as i turn the wheel, and turning sometimes feels a little rough. The plastic at the bottom looks to be coming apart, and the clip was coming off.
I found out the lower bearing is discontinued, but a '69 bearing works with modification according to some posts over on camarotech. I'll probably try to get parts thru this place: http://www.columnsgalore.com/index.htm
if your column is a standard (not tilt) i have some instructions for dissasembly and reassembly that i got from a guy at camarotech, if you want the breakdown pm me
I used the Shop Manual. The exploded drawing is a little small. The toughest thing to do was replace the snap ring at the top of the column against the spring pressure. I bought a tool just for the purpose from Snap On. I'll give you the number after I go out and find it.
I did this on my 67 tilt column and it wasn't fun. There really aren't any parts available for these, but you can rebuild the lower bearing. I would try rebuilding the lower bearing and if it still binds, take the column out and go through it. You can get new bearing balls and felt from an industrial supply or McMaster Carr. The lower bearing race comes apart pretty easy which is partly why it needs rebuilt.
i took the column out. the lower bearing is toast, and so is the bearing adapter. i cant get the bearing adapter, which is a big plastic molded sleeve. There is a big chunk missing from it. guess i'll be in the market for a column once i collect some cash thanks for everyones help.
Rick's First Gen Camaros sells rebuilt columns if you want to stay stock.

I did mine. it wasn't so bad. the 69 bearing is different than the 68. but, it will work. all you have to do is enlarge the plastic area so the 69 bearing will fit into it snuggly. so do it slowly till it just fits.. then reaassemble it.
