I have a 68 firebird convertible undergoing a complete restoration. There is a hole above the ignition switch, the hole looks factory. what goes there?
Welcome to the site As Brett mentioned, that is the hole for the lighter.

Welcome. And when you put the dash back together, on the left side of the dash, the '68 Sales Manual and Service Manual have the switches incorrectly reversed. The light switch is supposed to be above the wiper switch. The Owners Manual has it correct.
you finally managed to cause maximal confusion... At least with me. Didn´t you mix up right hand and left hand side?? A cigar lighter on the left side top would be a funny thing...
Actually Ash, You got me thinking about RHD. When I look at a pic of a RHD interior, it appears that the knob/switch order is neither the same as LHD or a mirror image of it.
Although difficult to see, the ignition appears bottom right, wiper top right (line across knob), lights top left and lighter bottom left.
My dyslexia kicked in again! Thats what 3-4 hours of sleep a night for the past week will do to you My 5 month old has decided to stop sleeping all together. We think he is teething,,, JOY  Sorry for the noisufnoc Thomas and others
My 67 has the wiper on top, lights bottom. Who says they're supposed to be the other way? Maybe they switched it for 68 because people were pulling off thier wiper knob to turn on the lights. I've done that a few times.
This is a good site. less than 24 hrs and I got answers. There was a cable in that hole above the ignition switch, looks like for a hand choke. I just knew they didn't have hand chokes from the factory. couldn't come across a cigarette lighter anywhere. Thanks everybody.
Here's my 68' dash area. You should find a single wire possibly dangling around behind there. This would be for the lighter.I believe i have some spare sockets and lighters if you need one.

Told you that you had found "The Best Place On Earth" for 1st gen info Sanford! (oh, and it looks like you had the answer in about 6 min actually! Lol...)
Bob, my 67 has the wiper above, and lights below on the left... Yours is right... I do the same thing... keep pulling that wiper knob to turn the lights on!
I've thought about installing a plug for that hole. knowing a lighter goes there I really should install one, never know when I need to plug in a radar detector or cell phone. Hey David, still have some spare sockets and lighters. might be needing them if I can't find any replacements. thanks everybody.
Sanford, I'll have a look and let you know.I'm pretty sure i have a socket, not 100% sure about the lighter.
