Need some help. I looked at the diagrams and they are a bit misleading. Trying to figure out which belt and what order (front to back) goes to which pulley.
Also, the Alternator pulley looks like it is 1/2 pulley width off set. I believe all the brackets i half are correct.
If the alternator pully doesn't align, you might have the wrong water pump. There is a 4" pump and a 4.25" pump. Mine has the 4" pump and the other pump creates the problem of which you mention.
Ah. Are there not 2 different water pumps??? I beleive the number of bolts differed between one another. So the measurement is the depth?? I have to check that out. Thanks. Keith
I checked the pulleys 1 more time. I messed up the earlier measurements. Turns out the power steering pulley is the one that is off slightly by a 1/2 width, not the alternator. Any new thoughts on may be the PS pulley is wrong??
There should be a 3/16" spacer washer on the stud behind the back of the power steering pump, in front of the alternator/ps mounting bracket. That's about half a belt worth of space, if yours is aligned too far back. I have a line drawing if you need it.

So the million dollar question many of us with 67's and 68's want to know (there's got to be someone besides me) is can the 8-bolt cover/waterpump be replaced with the newer 11 bolt and have the pulley's line up? You can get brand new covers from Ames.
Still need some help from out there. I have the pulleys for the crank, water pump, and AC compressor lining up pretty well. I have all the correct spacers on the PS bracket. The belts are on. Both the Alt. and PS belts look like they both come back towards the rear too much. Its just not one. The brackets appear to be correct. The PS pump/pulley and Alternator appear to be correct parts based on pictures i have seen out there.
Please tell me that its not suppose to be like this. Looks very odd and afraid the belts are going to wear.
Any advice be great. Thanks Keith, afirehawk1@msn.com
Let's walk through it: You say that the waterpump and crank line up pretty well. Does that mean they line up or not? The alignment should be prefect. They didn't do a smashing job at engineering the f/g/f, but they did a fair job at aligning the belts. If this part of the alignment isn't perfect, the issue lies in the different water pump lenghts or a crank pulley issue.
I sneaked down to the car and took a peek to see if I could remember what went wrong. A long time--probally 25 to 27 years--ago, I put the accessories back on, and they had an alignment problem. If I recall, they were back too far. I cannot remember what I did wrong, but I reassembled something wrong. It wasn't I left something out; instead, I did something backwards.
My computer loads slow. The image that Vikki posted is loading. I'll post, take a look, and come back if I can recall what went wrong by looking at the image.
Looked at the pulleys. The Water Pump and Crank are actually right on the money. As far as #19, i believe i have the correct spacer. Ordered it from GM. Seems like the ALT and PS pump itself should sit farther towards the front. Maybe i have the wrong ones but i thought there wer all basically the same. Got the ALT and PS Pump from NAPA or Advance Auto.
I remember putting mine together one time, and if I recall, the alt/ps sat back farther than they should. I didn't leave anything out; instead, I put something together incorrectly. Some of that real dumb crap. I said I wasn't going to do it tonight, but after I log off, I might crawl down into the grease pit/dust bowl, study the assembly and see if I can remember what caddywampus thing I did during installation.
This is the status..prior to pushing the car into the street...i decided to remove all the pulleys and start over...
OK...the water pump pulley (2 groove) has the part number 481040XT....i now realize upon review of the illustration, this is may be the wrong pulley. I have not taken the crank pulley (3 groove) off yet but am afraid this may be wrong too...I got the set from GTO Percy..these may fit a GTO instead??
Does anyone have a complete set of pulleys for a 69 with A/C and PS???? I am at the point of starting the car after a 4.5 year restoration and ready to run the car down the road...Any help out there? Thanks Keith afirehawk1@msn.com
I now have the current pulleys. The alignment is still not correct. Any ideas?? I believe I have the correct brackets. Can the power steering pump or alternator be wrong?? Maybe some pictures. I need help very badly......
