Has anyone heard of http://www.drclassic.com They have a couple of aftermarket hoods on Ebay. I would like to know if it is worth the money or should I go with classic industries or some other vender. Here is the hood on ebay.
Their hood looks okay to me and more nicely done at the front point than the Goodmark one. The primer is lacquer stuff or something soluable in lacquer thinner so it will need to be removed and done over with epoxy.
The hood DR Classic sells is nice and straight. Its an imported part from Taiwan. The carton does not show the actual vendor. It will need some adjusting to get scoops to fit flush. I looked at two hoods and they both looked satisfactory.
I can't comment on fit against the cowl or fenders since mine is still in the carton. Assuming it fits, it won't need a skim coat of filler to make it flat. I paid $300 at the show.
I have a sneaking suspicion that that IS a Goodmark hood. I find it hard to believe that anyone else has went to the trouble of making the dies. One thing that concerns me is the common occurance of substandard 'factory rejects' ending up on eBay. There could be a reason that these hoods were factory rejects and picked up by this seller. Goodmark has made soooo many 'barely usable' and 'not usable' parts that I would want a vendor like Classic Ind that I could return the part to if it didn't fit. So far, I have returned three quarters and two doors made by Goodmark because of nonconformities. Not to mention the panels that I made fit that should have been returned.
Can't comment on the part you are referencing but D&R is a good vendor. They are one of the major Camaro vendors. I have purchased from them a few times and since they are in the Chicago area, I have gone to their location..
When I cannot find parts from our Pontiac vendors, I will check their catalog. They often have the correct part if that part is also used by Camaro. They have a much better fastener selection than any of our Pontiac vendors.
I returned a bunch of stuff by Goodmark and determined I would never buy another repro exterior body panel without seeing it first hand. Unfortunately that means buying only at shows because no one is nearby.
As far as I can tell, this hood sold by D&R is not Goodmark's. I asked D&R at the time but forget the name. They did not say it was Goodmark though. That doesn't mean it didn't originate from the same shop in Taiwan. One stamper could ship under a few lables. It's not marked on the carton. Names that come to mind are DII, Golden Legion and Goodmark. Maybe they are the same original manufacturer. Anyway, these parts need to be examined before buying if at all possible.
It would be surprising for there to be numerous folks tooled up to make this part. I saw hoods that appeared to be from three different vendors at Carlisle and they did look different. The largest difference was in the primer coat and the forming of the point of the hood. It could be quality variations, different lots or mishandling. Other body panels such as quarters and door skins had obviously poor body lines where the panel wanders adjacent to the intended crease.
D&R was nice to deal with at the show and I recommend them. Both 400 hoods they had on display were in excellent condition and were the best available at fall Carlisle.
Tom is right about the repro bumpers. I saw many of the rear bumpers at the show. They had tooling marks showing through the thin chrome. They look bad from a distance. For bumpers, get the original restored by Tri-City or equivalent.
Thanks for all of the in put, I think that when I do this I'll go with Classic Industries, I already have a set of OEM scoops so that will not be a problem.
