What is the best direction to go for a new 3 series rear end.
There are several vendors that have posi carriers but which one to go with is confusing?
There are:
Auburn
Eaton
Strange Engineering
Stock open 3 series carrier with Powertrax by Richmond

I am looking at gears too, but it appears that Richmond is the way to go on that one.
What combo would you go with for reliability and then price?

I haven't installed the Powertrax unit that I recently acquired yet, but it looks like a good quality piece (1500 miles, so no wear). Haven't heard anything bad (yet). The previous owner had an issue with the housing and changed up to a 8.5" (mine's an 8.2"). He did say that he didn't like the clicking sound as he went around corners, but I don't know how loud it was. Guess I'll find out!

GO with the Eaton unit, as it is rebuildable. The Auburn cannot be rebuilt.

Steve, is the Auburn unit not rebuildable because there are no parts available?...or is it a design thing?...or cost prohibitive?

Joe, I'm thinking you'd be happier with a posi set up rather than the lock up. But, we both know that I don't know JACK!! Have you ever met him?

It appears that the powertrax is out of the running. I have gotten some bad feedback from others and its not worth it when you look at the cost.

Doesn't auburn have an exchange or rebuild deal on their unit?
