Planning on buying a new distributor for a 400. I would like to buy either the MSD or Mallory but not sure which is the best. I have heard that on the Mallory that you have to replace a filter allot, but haven't heard much about the MSD. I would like yalls opinion it would be greatly appreciated? Thanks
I put a MSD ready-to-run distributor on my 400 this summer. I really like it. Easy installation and I think the car runs better that it did with the old points even though the points were in good shape. It definitely starts better. I have no experience with the Mallory, so I can't give you a comparison. However, I have heard good things about them.
One thing about the MSD that I have heard is that corrosion can sometimes be a problem with them. I haven't run into this yet, but it's something to watch out for.
Basically if you get the Mallory Unilite, make sure you put a ballast resistor on a full 12V line or check to make sure the power line (factory resistor wire) you use is down to about 6 volts. And use their power filter to prevent electrical spikes. This way, that expensive electronic module will live forever. I got a lot of years out of mine after making these adjustments and will be putting another Unilite on my Firebird.
PS, grounding the distributor while moving it one tooth up or down will short out the modular too (how do I know?). ALWAYS disconnect the battery when playing around with a Unilite.

I have a Mallory - the next unit will be the MSD. The HyFireIV is a little flakey. The distributor is the Mallory mechanical magnetic and it seems to work okay. There's a reason the pro's use MSD - I'd say go that route. I heard the two wire magnetic distributor was the way to go.
