My car had shackles on the rear when I got it,looks bad. I want to take them off but don't really know how the rear of the spring mounts to the frame. any one have a good picture or can give me dimensions of the bracket that should be there?
There's supposed to be shackles that attach the rear of the spring to the frame-like piece next to the gas tank. You must be saying you have extra long shackles to make up for saggy springs? If so, get new springs and stock shackles. Then they won't show.
Sounds like someone added long shackles to a saggy spring , like Bob says... I think you "may" need new leafs? but the correct are also shackles ,but shorter...readily available , from for instance Classic ind., after having been present when someone else just took 'oversize' shackles out , be prepared to have 'fun' time getting the rubber pieces out for the old bushings ...his was really stuck....best way to get to the old is to drop the tank.... you`re going to say "yeah right, like I`m gonna do that" , but if you dont ,you`ll prob say later ,"Yeah I should have dropped the tank"...this case took 5 hrs, 3.5 or more was to remove the rubber bushings w little pliers etc...theres no way to get a drill or anything in there! but with tank dropped, yes! You can try first w/o dropping the tank ,but my advise woyuld be to have very little in it when you jack it up or put on a lift so when they wont come out , you can drop the tank... just mho..
Loren, I'm just starting the replacement project for my 4-leaf rear springs and shocks (and axle of course). I'll let you know how this goes and post pics of the process.
