I have a 400 transmission in a 1969 Firebird. I just had the seal replaced where the gear selector goes in the side of the transmission because it was leaking. The guy who replace the seal said the shaft had a place that he couldn't buff out so its still leaking. He said he wasn't sure if you could replace the shaft. Does anyone know how I can get this problem solved?
If you can locate a replacement shaft, it can be replaced. This shaft had to come out for him to replace the seal.
Here is a photo of the selector shaft and detent plate. The seal is a neoprene and steel piece that press fits in the case.
There is a pin retaining it to the case inside. You remove this first, then the shaft can slide out. The red arrow in this picture points to the end of the pin.
