I'm restoring a 68 Firebird convertible. It's missing the cigarette lighter. The wire is there behind the dash to plug into the lighter. What all do I need ? I have a new housing, lighter element and lighter. but nothing goes together. Is there another piece that goes in the housing before the element ? And is the lighter suppose to snap in place into the emement or just touch ?
Hi Sanford, do you have all of these pieces? The forth piece is the lamp housing. It's not needed, unless you want to find the lighter socket in the dark.
Hmm, My lighter element is different. shorter, 1 1/2 inches. I don't have the 4th piece. and my housing is different. mine is 1 7/8 long and doesn't have any slots or holes on the sides. I got the lighter and housing from NPD. they said that's all I need. after receiving the pieces, something didn't look right, NPD doesn't carry the element. I got that ftom Classic Ind. all 3 parts are suppose to be for a 68 firebird.
The lighter knob in the pic is missing the element. You need to slip the chrome bezel (part 2) over the housing (part 3) and mount it in the dash. Then the retainer (part 5) screws to the socket from behind the dash. The forth part is a lamp socket, and will only work with the retainer in the pic. I forgot to mention that this is a '69 cig lighter. I'm sure this was used for many years of GM cars. The knobs changed from year to year, but the housing & retainer should be the same. This is a spare I don't need. I think the chrome bezel is for '69 only. I haven't been able to find a pic of a '68 dash to confirm this. If interested, $10 plus shipping. PM me if interested. Oh, the lamp socket is not included. For now

I have all but # 4 too. suppose to be for a 68 and none of it goes together. I'm gonna check a local wrecking yard, they have older pontiacs including a 69 firebird. According to Classic Ind and NPD catalogs 69 is different than 67 and 68. I don't see why 69 parts wont work, still considering offer from fellow member.
Rummaging through lots might be a waste. The assembly should be sold as complete and new. I'm confident 69s were different due to the new console assembly for that year, but the bezel could be the same. Pretty simple piece.
