Looking at http://www.wallaceracing.com, the block is either a 1973 or 1976 casting. In order to know which one, you also need to look up the block casting nr, stamped on the "ledge" behind the valve cover by #8 cylinder. Casting 481988 = 1973, 500557 = 1976.
you should have an engine id code on the front of the block under the vavle cover, to the left of the waterpump as you`re looking at the engine from the front......like ac XR, YZ, WT,ZK , or YZ or such
You should also look by the distributor mounting area for any letters and numbers. A "73" would indicate 1973. There may also be a date code consisting of a letter and 3 numbers. My 69 has A229, which is a January 22, 1969 casting.
I checked the stamping where you inidcated and the two letter code looks like X4 but I could be wrong on the second character. Many of the other block identifyers that were described in the front of my Year One catalog (by the way 20% off all orders for a limited time), but they are not visible with the engine mounted in the car and with exhaust, water pump, valve covers etc in the way.
Mark, my closest 'guess' based on a X4 is a XA = 77 model 400 V8 180 hp motor, or other guesses are a (XR 73 model 350 V8 2 bbl 175 hp), , XN 73 400 4 bbl 230 hp, (X7 , XM , XE 455 250 hp, XR 350 71 model 250 hp), 71 XX 400 265 hp, 70 XP 400 370 hp, XX 400 265 hp,but all those are from a Firebird book, emngine could also be out of another Pontiac... but my best guess is a XA since its so close to X4....?? all this is just the block no...
I saw a X4 engine in a 76 big car not long ago.I couldnt see the cast #,too much grease.I couldnt find that code listed anywhere.It was a 2 v engine.I thought it was a 350!
Thanks all for the input. Also, thanks PMI for the engine rebuilder recommendation in S. California. Looks like the engine is definitely Pontiac but most likely not originally out of a Firebird.
