This is just a curiosity question. On the 67 Firebirds they used non staggered shocks that mount in the rear wheel wells. Why do they also have the mounts in the trunk like the 68/69's use for their staggered shocks? Mine has these mounts in the trunk but are not drilled out for shock mounting and was always curious why they were there if GM never intended to use them.
There's no problems. My 67's shocks upper mounts are in the wheel wells (there are mount plates welded in the wheel wells between the wheel well housing and the frame rails). Im just curious why there are mounts in the trunk as well. Everthing I've seen or read say's that 67's don't use these mounts in the trunk and some publications I've read say that ther're not even suposed to be there, so I'm just curious there are two sets of shock mounts on athe car when they only used one in that model year, that's all. I mean were they trying to use a staggered set up in 67 and change theri minds or something like that?
A picture probably would be helpful, but from what you have written - it sounds like somebody modified your rear shock mounts. The mounts in the trunk floor are the ones from the factory.

It relates to the tooling process. When they set up the stamping dies, the dies can have areas in them that stamp areas that will be used on other cars. It's quite common--even in today's cars--to see stamped areas that are not used.
I'll have to see if I can find somebody who can post pics for me (no digital camera or software). It's not a stamping either. In the trunk are a set of shock mount plates welded to the shock towers, but there has never been anything mounted there, there are no mounting holes drilled. My shocks go straight up from the lower plates to a set of shock mounts welded between the wheel housing and frame rail. If anybody here can upload regular pictures and would be willing to lend a hand, PM me an adress and I'll send you some pics.If not I'll see what I can do. Thanks.
