I have used this site's body tag analyzer for '67 and '69 Firebirds. The '67 analyzer has inputs for option codes, but the '69 analyzer doesn't. I recall that '67 codes give a lot of good info., as do the codes for Camaros. Info. pertaining to the '69 Firebird analyzer suggests that many records don't exist and codes such as 3C and K498 had internal assembly plant meanings that can't be decoded. How can someone tell if a '69 Firebird was a Sprint OHC car versus a plain OHC car????? Were some options standard on Sprint cars, such as floor shifters or front disc brakes? Is it likely that a Sprint car came with a column shifter? Does a letter or number in the VIN identify a Sprint car?
If it is automatic column shift it might be possible. Get a PHS document on it: http://www.phs-online.com/ You cannot tell from the VIN if it was a Sprint.
It would not have come with AC if a 69 sprint. With auto trans, the code on the block by the filler neck should start with ZL, but some of the earlier 3.8L cars had the same codes. The vin should be on the front of the block. i think on the driver's side behind the balancer... Q or someone else might chime in with better info.
Thanks for the reply. I hope to hear from anyone who can help. The engine is missing from the car. The car didn't come with A/C, and I've read that no '69 Sprint cars had A/C. The car came with an auto. tranny and column shift. Did Pontiac hide build sheets, say under the rear seats, as Chevy did? I'm hoping certain factors such as disc brakes (perhaps), etc. will identify the car as a Sprint car. I can't understand why Pontiac didn't code '69 cars as well as it did '67 cars.
Build sheets were put under the seat and between the gas tank and trunk panel. the rocker panels should have a sprint emblem.... although easily added / deleted. If your vins end number starts with a 600001 definately a six cylinder ie. 223379L6????? I know the sprints w/ manuals have a damper on the tail housing. disc's were an option. PHS will be the only way to tell if the engine is gone! Good Luck!
my car was originally a sprint ohc six pwr disc brakes,am radio,4bbl,rear defrost,3 spd heavy duty manual, manual steering,3.55 safety track.it had someother options but i cant remember them off the top of my head.if it still had the ohc when i got it would probably still have it and i would have found another bird to hotrod and leave this one as is.the sprint six is a pretty cool powerplant very high tech for its time.
