I thought I saw a post on here a while ago about someone who has painted their dash face themselves. Is this do-able or should I go with a pro. I just did my console and it looks great. Jimbo
I used Black-it "Eggshell Black" from the Classic Industries catalogue, Pg 282 Part number 42040.
The ease of application and finish was VERY good. I suggest you buy 2 cans as i have #2 on order as I ran out doing the glove box door.
Make sure you prep the surface (ie sand using fine grit paper)and most of all if you are leaving the old paint more or less intact, use a silcone polish remover to pre-prep the surface to eliminate any chance of fish eyes from Armor-All or the like.
Hi Dave, Thanks for the input. I will look into getting the paint you suggested. Now the question of the day is. Did you remove the dash face from the car or did you paint it while it was still in the car? Or is that a stupid question. My car is not in need of any mayor work and I drive it regularly so I would not want to pull the dash until this winter if at all. Thanks Jimbo
Jimbo, You'll have to do it while it's in the car. Just take off everything and unbolt the steering column under the dash so that it can drop out of the way. The gauge housing will also come out and you can repaint that while you have it out of the car. Just make sure you mask off the windshield and sidewindows and doors to avoid the overspray. It's not hard at all and should only take you a weekend to disassemble, paint and reassemble. By the way, what did you do to your console? Did you remove the woodgrain or paint over it?
Thanksfor the tips king bird. I have a 67 ragtop and my console does not have the woodgrain. I believe that is seen on the 68's. I found it quite simple to do my console. I simply removed it from tne car and disasembled it completly. It was in great shape so I just gave it a good cleaning and sprayed it lightly with 3 or 4 coats. It looks brand new. Jimbo
You guys are luck to have a Black dash... Very easy to repaint... mine, also a 67 is Blue, and a slightly different color blue than other interior parts of course! And the same with the console... Blue. But at least that is similar to the kick panels, and seat backs... at least is is now!
Top of dash I believe is 0% gloss, while I think the dash front is a 30% gloss (I'll have to look the %'s up again) But in Black, you have many choices, and can get it very close with paint in a spray can if you are good with that method.
The Eggshell Black from CI is indeed 30% which is correct, and I have yet to do the top in the 0% I have on my shelf (I believe it's a different "flat black" product from the CI catalogue).
I found the Black-it VERY easy to apply, without the tendancy to want to drip/sag when oversprayed, which is nice as I found it difficult to stand the car on it'd nose.
I've used the SEM Landau black redoing my pillar posts and misc small vinyl/rubber pieces and it is a nice product as well. Their prep spray is likely the same type of silcone cleaner I mentioned above.
