Ok. This isn't exactly a firstgen question, but it should be mostly the same parts. I picked up a 79 10th anniversary TA over the weekend. One of the previous owners couldn't drive stick, so he had an auto installed. I've got the original T10, shifter, and clutch in the trunk. The peddle is still under the dash, just wire tied up as far as it would go. So far, I know I'm missing the bell housing. What else might I need to put the 4 speed back in? Flywheel?
You will need a manual trans flywheel, (unless the clutch in the trunk is brand new, I recommend replacing it) clutch/pressure plate/throwout bearing/pilot bearing/bushing, bellhousing, clutch fork and boot, Z-bar (maybe Z-bar and Z-bar stud are still in the car), return spring and correct trans mount crossmember. Sounds like you have everything else.
Oh yeh. I have the original driveline too. Thanks for that list of things I need to look for Tom. I haven't really dug into it too much yet, so the z-bar might be in there. I haven't even emptied the trunk yet either, so I might have the fork in there too. Think I'll do that this evening. I'm not sure why the guy ditched the bellhousing and kept all the rest.
I think I got a pretty good deal on it. The car is mostly solid. There's a little rust on the passenger toe panel, a couple small holes on one side of the trunk, and rust under the doors. Everything else is reasonably sound. Original carb and T10 have both been rebuilt. Once the transmission is back in, it's all numbers matching 400/4spd. The guy put the carb on it so we could drive it onto the trailer, and the engine fired right up (open headers sound awesome). The interior is trash and will be the biggest expense. Seat covers alone are $1000.
I paid $3200 for the car and original parts he had that aren't on it, an extra set of seats, and a replacement left front fender flare.
Your choices of flywheel will be limited. The late 400 has a small crank register. Hays makes a flywheel for the small crank register. Summit carries it.
Emptied out the trunk this evening. I found the original Flywheel at the bottom. Z-bar, fork and boot, and a couple other linkage type pieces I couldn't immediately identify in a box with the hurst shifter. It looks like all the major pieces are there except for the bell housing. I'll get a new clutch, pressure plate, and throwout bearing when I install it. I'm sure I'll have other questions then. Thanks.
Trashed interior and t-tops are not un-common for 2nd gen T-As.Check your top-seals asap,looks like you got the Hurst-Tops! Congrats-looks like a good deal-MIK
What a piece of cake job! When I get my cars they should have a label, "Much assembly required with no parts". When I bought my TA all the air conditioner parts were gone. That's including all the stuff under the dash and on the firewall/engine. It's been a long haul getting it back like factory. Now you would never know the car was raced out. Headers and electric fan, gone!
