Hi I just pulled out my fuel pump on a 69 400 pontiac block and was wondering if putting it back in required a special reinstallation process? Or does it just slide right back in the way it came out,I remember one time a guy told me that you needed a slider bar of some type to fit it in a special way but that was on a different car I think. If you can give me a few pointers that would be great. Thanks and you can E-mail me at ZORDON316@aol.com with your replies.
I installed the new fuel pump and it doesn't fill the fuel filter up very much maybe just under the filters edge when sitting horizontally ,it is a rather large clear filter about the size of a 50 cent piece around and maybe 3 inches long it doesn't seem to be pumping much gas into it though ? Should I be getting more gas than that in the filter or is the filter to big,I recall some of the older big block pontiacs have had larger steel filters. Maybe I have a clogged fuel line from the gas tank? And would this make the engine pop a bit like it's sucking in air from the exhaust or intake manifold? A bit of help would be appreciated. Thanks
You could do a test. Take the line that normally goes from the pump to the tank and extend it into a gas can. If the fuel pump picks up fuel better from the can you have an obstruction in the line to the tank or in the tank.
I don't think that the filter will fill up. I have one of those clear plastic ones and there always seems to be just a little bit of gas in it. It never looks like enough to me, either.
Air in the filter means that there is air in the filter, and it has nothing to do with fuel flow. The problem is probabally that the air cannot be displaced. If you could position the filter vertical, it wouldn't have air. Anything other than a veritcal positionl, there is a good chance that it will have air in it.
If it runs okay, everything is okay. If a properly running engine isn't a good enough verification, you can take Jim's test further down the line.

DISABLE THE SPARK TO THE ENGINE before testing.
Remove the fuel line from the carburater. Crank the engine, and if it pumps a healty shot of fuel, everyting is okay.

DISABLE THE SPARK TO THE ENGINE BEFORE TESTING, AND MAKE SURE THAT YOU KEEP OVERFLOWING FUEL AND SPARK SOURCES FAR AWAY.
Smoking a butt while handeling gas isn't a problem because the ember on a smoke isn't hot enough to ignite gasoline, but even an ever so small static spark and a trace of gasoline is an instant explosion, so a disconnected coil and a little gas is a disaster waiting to happen. Let's not even discuss the volume of gas that will come out of the line if the engine starts to run.
Amervo is totally right on with the filter problem. If you think about it, you have 3/8 diameter of fuel into the filter and 3/8 diameter fuel out of the filter. If you have 3/8 diameter of fuel in the filter it's going to look pretty darn empty!
