Once again I have 1968 axle non posi
The print shows two gaskets. I think one is metal (shim) and the other gasket material. Which gasket goes where? Does the metal gasket go against the axle housing and the material gasket go against the outside of the brake backing plate. I keep looking at the print but just can't make it out.

I would put the metal gasket against the surface that is the smoothest. Common sense would dictate that the gasket would go against the housing. They are just taking up space so it doesn't matter a whole lot.

I could not see the need for a gasket. The shim yes but why a gasket. If you have an oil seal why would you need the gasket.

The metal gasket goes between the brake backing plate and the housing and the paper gasket goes between the retainer and the brake backing plate.

The gasket is there to take up space because of the variances in trueness of the components. It's a little 'fudge factor' so the machining lines at the plants could 'open up' their tolerances.
