i am new to pontiacs and need help.i have a 69 bird and need some advise on weather to rebuild the powerglide or put a turbo350 in.i will be putting a 400 in and want to have a quick car and have been told to rebuild it and have been told to junk it.

I'd go with a TH350 or better yet a TH400 or for the best of all worlds go with a 200R tha has overdrive for good freeway cruising and almost as tough as the TH400. But a little more work, and with any of the above you may need to re size your drive shaft. BUT you will be much happier with a bigger, badder tranny in the long run! I have had a TH400 behind a 400, 421 and now a 455 with no problems at all!

Converting from a powerglide to a TH350 will require a shifter conversion kit. The drive shaft and cross-member will interchange. TH400 requires ****ing kit, drive shaft, and cross-member changes.
The other transmissions will require a bit of work/engineering and more money. Depending on what you're planning to do with the car the latter option is probably worth the effort.
Most people I know prefer the powerglide for drag racing. When used with the proper stall converter and a bunch of horsepower they work fine. This is not very well suited for street racing or everyday driving however.

where does one get this 200R?

Don't get rid of the powerglide. You will find that that the core is well sought after by anyone that is into 1/4 mile racing or is restoring back to original. Better yet hang on to it if you are ever going to re-sell your Bird.

I'm sure it's a 300...the 300 pan has a strange looking protective shield on the r. rear for the modulator.

I have a '69 4.1L OHC6, 250ci, 230 hp. Sprint that I thought had a 2-speed Powerglide but discovered it's a ST-300. I believe this is what came stock with this model. What is the big difference between the two and do you know where I can obtain some literature about the super turbine?
