i have a 67 firebird convertable that i am parting out and i was looking at the rear end housing....it has leaf springs and factory traction bar on it ...
my ? is at the top of the center section , there are 2 loops that look like they are for trailing arms..1 loop on each side of the housing.... like chevelle , so on... NONE ON THE BOTTOM .. is this original or not?
The '67 Firebird 8.2 ten bolt rearend utilized the same center section as a '67 Tempest-LeMans-GTO. The axle tubes pressed in were the same as the late '66 & 67-69 Tempest-LeMans-GTO. Pontiac axle division just set up a jig & welded on monoleaf spring perches for the '67 Bird. Due to the A-body rearend having the upper control arm perches, the '67 Birds had them too...just no bushings pressed in or A-body perches.
Interestingly in '69, the Birds shared their bare axle tubes with the new for '69 Grand Prix. Both of these rearends will have a flat spot on top of the axle tube inboard of the brake backing plate flange.
If you want some advice, go find a rear end out of an early 70's Nova. They're an 8.5 inch unit and WAY STRONGER. Plus they bolt right in. Thats what I did in mine, and I used an Auburn Gear 3 Spring posi unit (a little strong for the street) and I'll tell you what, this car hooks and goes and I'll never ever break it. Plus the nice thing is with the 8.5 posi units work with multiple gears.

LOL...Loops are NOT for moving axle...someone put a newer style rear in the car. The loops are where the trailing arms would have gone..in the seventies, Pontiac made "universal" rear axle pumpkins...if it was for a leaf spring car, the loops werent used...$ conscience!
