I was wondering if anyone knows of a way of testing the fuel pump diaphram when the pump is off the engine? After reading Sammypoodle's post about hard to start after a week, I started wondering about my pump. I have the 230 OHC 4bbl engine and have looked at my spare engine (which needs a rebuild)to see what that pump is like. It's been sitting for a number of years and is probably dried up. Is there a way to test it off engine? Cause so far the three auto stores I've phoned say they can't get it for me anymore. I will be trying a few others tomorrow. But if there is a way to test a pump I would like to take that route first. Thanks for any advice.
You could pressure test it from the outlet side. When the diaphrams go bad they leak down. Give it about 20 pounds of pressure and see how long it holds.
Thanks Jim I'll give that a try and see if it is good or not before I start my phone calls tomorrow. I'm guessing that if it holds that I should be good for a while depending on how dried up the pump is.
Thanks Vikki I'm trying to get ahold of my sister in Miniapolis to see if she can bring one up for me when she comes up next weekend. Cause you are right, the corner auto stores don't have anything like that.If she can't then I guess I'll have to pay all the shipping costs to get it up here. Hey Sammy good to hear that your's is running smoothly. I hope that this is my problem too. The spare was no good. I tried what Jim suggested. The air went right through. I hope that the one in the car lasts through the weekend. There's a car show on Sunday that I want to go to. My bird is the only ohc6 at the car shows and I like showing it. AL
