I am restoring a 68 firebird 400 4spd convertible. The body was rusted out. I found a clean rust free shell. I would like to keep this a "matching numbers" car if possible. Anyone out there know a way to legally switch the vin plates between the two body shells? I live in California. I've checked local motor vehicle codes / laws. Of coarse they say this is illegal due to "chop shop" problems. But it goes on to say "unless authorized by the department of motor vehicles". But the department of motor vehicles claims not to know anything about this. I'll go with a non-matching numbers restoration if there are no legal was to do this.
