I know all about these emblems....They were produced my a person in NC and he carved them out of wood firt then made them in a mold, cleaned them up and had them plated. they have been around for a long time and they are by far NOT originals. In fact, look up (on a google search) Nifty in night shade and HPP did an article on a 1968 Ram air Firebird and they spoke about these emblems as well.
For not being an original GM product they're sure going for a pretty high price on eBay. The part I am wondering about is how this NC person would have carved the p/n 9796827 using wood. That's pretty delicate work unless a secondary process was used to get that correct looking.
I think that the price is dictated by availability more so than origionality. My guess is that the availibility is quite limited; otherwise, eveyone would be coming out of the woodwork to collect their 600 bucks.
This is purely a case of supply and demand, and they look nice in the pictures. If I were putting togehter a ram air car and money wasn't an obstical, I'd have a set to complete the car, and I wouldn't car whether or not they are correct.
They aren't work a nickel over 50 bucks a set. I'd make my own out of putty before dropping 600 bucks on them. Think of all the projects you could knock off on an FGF for 600 duckies!
'68 428 HO M3 Monster, 4-on-the-floor! Need I say more?
67400 FB, Do you know the name of the person who produced these in NC? Or where this person lived. I have an idea of who you may be thinking of. Thanks.
I just checked my Pontiac MPC's. They are listed in the 11.1.69 edition under GR8.030. Listed as 69 F\8 Plate, Hood Name 'RamAir' 9796828 LH/ 9796827RH.
Definately not a 67 or 68 FB piece.
They are not listed in my 5.1.68 nor my 3.1.70 MPC's.
Firstgenra, I do know the name of the person. If you PM me I will chat with you. BTW, I have a set of them from the NC person prior to sending them to final detailing, They are moulded in metal and still look like wood.
