I was just looking for a second, third,... opinion on this car. I have a possible intererst in purchasing this car and wanted to get some opinions from folks who are more of an expert than me. To me it looks like a very clean car. Is there anything i am missing, things that pop us as a concern, and do you guys think its worth mid to upper 20s?? Before i made any commitment i would go look at the car...but since its 12 hours away i would like to get as much info as possible so i dont waste a trip. Thanks for any help. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/CONV...420QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
I dont think its worth 28,500 for a non numbers matching car. I think the mid 20's would be right. The motor isnt even the right pontiac blue.
And this car was on ebay about a month back from a different seller. This guy must've bought it and tried to turn around and sell it for more than he got it for.
looks pretty good... not sure why the top doesnt go down further , mine does... The cocktail shakers ( vibration dampeners) are missing (at least the rears, cant tell about fronts) , no biggie, you can get for about $200 /set ,or per pair usually... Water temp gauge is where clock was/would be or a delete plaque , it has three other after mkt gauges, not sure what those are , but usually water , oil, volt or amp...so whats the 4th? looks like it was spray painted black under neath...wonder if thats hiding anything...? but looks clean , there doesnt appear to be oil leaks ,at least not under neath , if its been driven ,it would show up..on that 'painted ' surface... console burlwood cover is nice and dark... looks in general to be a nice clean car...its just a little younger than mine , built in the same week (4th week october) at the same plant...has the 'early' 69 air vent balls (like 68s) just like mine ...engine has a/c style oil dip stick... If it runs good I`d go for it, but as said abv probably not worth 28.5 for non matching no car...Mine isnt either matching , I have 24k in mine, feel mine is worth it !maybe between 22-25k?
I wouldn't buy it because I don't do business with people who include negative business practices. "I'll burn you if you don't pay" DUH! What an idiot!!!!
I couldn't see all of the pictures because a lot of them were X 'ed out. The pictures I could see didn't show anything. Based on the nature of the seller, I assume it's a con artist selling the car. Also, look at the description. The lights work. Based on those to items, I wouldn't touch it.
Instead, I would have bought 69 350 Rag Top's car because it's clearly a case of what you see is what you get, and the seller wasn't attempting to hide anything.
The problem with the eBay car is that you can pack the rust holes with bondo, block it well, somke some paint on, and presto! you have a show car for less restoration costs than 69 Rag's purchase price.
69: My 9 had identical rust in the fenders. I had pictures of the repair, and they are probabally still exist in my earlier posts. The thing is that my computer had vd and I cannot draw up the patch.
How did you work the lip of the fender that goes behind the fender? I could have tacked to the existing area, but it was obvious that the cancer was too deeply ingrained to do a lasting repair, so I ended up fabricating the whole area out of one peice of metal.
Did you fabricate the area behind or were you able to save it and attach to it? If you fabricated the area, how did you do it?
Thanks for the input thus far guys. Bjorn, i did notice a couple of the things you mention like the top not seeming to go down all the way and the underside looking like it was spray bombed. I also agree that its probably not worht $28,500 but was wondering if you could pick it up for 25k if it was worth that. 69 350..thanks for the info that the car was on ebay a month ago. That is good to know. The car certainly looks straight..doesnt look like its been bondo'd together by any means. For that price it obviously shouldnt be. Any other info keep it comin. Guess i will just see how the auction goes over the coming days and go from there. Thanks again guys!!
I have a little plastic device called a "Filler Finder" that you can run over a car (has felt on the side to be used) that uses lights to tell you how think bondo is. I bought it around 1985 and used it when I looked at my 68 Firebird just 3 months ago. It still works. A weak magnet may also work.
The car looks pretty nice, but I would have a hard time going over $20. I purchased a 68 hardtop with 61,000 miles and original 400 for less than $20. It was probably a pretty good deal, but I put quite a bit of value on the original engine. This car is a convertible which does add some value.
You need to do what you are comfortable with. If you really like the car and don't care about the nonoriginal engine, a little over $20 may not be so bad. But if the car is not really what you want, you might should keep looking. Don't get in too big a hurry to buy.
To Johhny Macs question of it being worth $28,500 if it was a Camaro. As a pretty knowledgeable person when it comes to first gen Camaros and the market for them the answer is absolutely yes. If it was a 69 Camaro Convertible with a 396 non original motor in the condition this car appears to be in... it would go mid thirtys easy. And pretty quickly at that. I kinda disagree that it wouldnt be worth it as well. Way i see it...a car is worth what people are willing to pay. Simple fact right now is people are willing to pay pretty big bucks for first gen Camaros..especially 69s. Why firebirds lag well behind in value is still a mystery to me...despite all the explanations ive heard. Also, in regards to this car. As the old saying goes, "when the top goes down, the price goes up" From what i have seen a convertible automatically adds at least 5 grand to the price of these cars.
I agree that stating that the lights work is an odd comment. Some of these guys are strictly salesman and may have been selling encyclopedia's last week. Hearing that crowds rush to see the car certainly does not tell me the condition it is in. He doesn't even indicate the miles on the car. No way 25. 18k for that car would mean it better be PERFECT. Original drivetrain would make it worth what....? 30?? You gotta see it first!!!
Good points. Im starting to shy away from the car. Not getting that warm fuzzy feeling about it. The fact that its a dealer is also causing me to shy away now.
Yeah i see its been removed. I think im just gonna go the route of buying a solid project 69 Vert if i can find one. Then restore it myself so i know what im getting. So hard today... so often you dont know what your getting when you buy them "all done" Anyone wanna buy a solid 69 Coupe project car.
Personally I`d not buy a "done" car with less than 2 yr paint job....b/c at that point it 'ususlly' shows up if the under job is not done right... I`d never buy a car thats "just painted"..3,4 yr old paint is fine...
I hear ya on the paint. Its funny, im going to spring carlisle this week and your statement reminded me of that. Every year when i go to Carlisle you can walk around the Car Coral and just smell the fresh paint. Cant imagine what some of those cars look like after 2-3 years.
