For you who may go to PY once in awhile , a very nice member there , Larry Davis, was killed in a MC accident yesterday…not really a MC accident ,he was hit from behind by a Suburban by a young driver , while sitting at a redlight
As I stated on the PY forum, I met Larry once and he was a great guy. Im deeply saddened by his loss. He was a great guy and left a great impression on me. God bless him and his family.
This was what Larry had to say about death in one of his past posts. He was an awesom guy:
"We all may think we know. But that bridge will be crossed by us all in due time. I find it pretentious to think we know what or how we'll act as we embrace our demise. Keep in mind we are the only organism that knows we will ultimately die. To a degree our entire lives are spent preparring for that culmination."
Joe , I remember that post...from the thread we were discussing "have you prepared...".....
I never met Larry ,but we "spoke" some on the board , he always seemed to have his head on straight!
too bad w fluke acidents like this....I bet the poor guy that hit him will have a hard time getting over this too...probably was talking on a phone, or rolling with the music... sad.
I hate to hear about it, even though I didn't know the guy. I guess MC is motorcycle. I have known 3 guys killed on bikes, and 2 with debiliting injuries, one lost his leg, the other had his whole lower jaw ground off of his face. But I don't know of anyone killed in an automobile.
I have always loved the sensation of being on a bike, but these are the reasons I don't own one or ride on one. And, as usual, the guys I knew who died or got injured on a bike, none of the accidents were their fault.
Still, it's sad becuse I understand the desire to be on a bike, and you cannot go out and ride one because some idiot in a vehile will end up killing you.
Yeah Bjorn, I stopped for a brief second to think of the guy that hit Larry. He's a 20 year old kid. A whole lifetime to live with this. I pray for him too.
I have been riding for the past 33 years and a life member of the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) for almost all of them. It's scary thinking of all the people out there that don't see you and then it's amazing to think of all the people out there that just don't care. Most bikers are killed or maimed by people who aren't paying attention to other motorists and who think that just because they're bigger than you that they have the right of way and f*** you if you don't like it. I have had many run-ins with these types. God Bless you Larry and my sympathy and condolences to your family. Another needless tragedy that will most likely go unpunished.

I think they won. We have a seat belt law. How is it any different?

thats baffling to me too , jim....here in Texas you dont have to wear a helmet anymore....I had to when I rode, and wasnt happy about it...but it was probably good... I just dont understand the "law", ..."buckle up, its the law" is on signs everywhere...but not helmets..its weird, maybe it just because motorcyclists argued their point more that car drivers??
I use the seat belt, did use the helmet ,but still think it should be your choice , not the law..//just mho
Helmet law has not been repealed in Michigan. If not law, I would still wear one, having had the unique experience of skidding on asphalt at 45 MPH with the side of my head and body in full contact for 50 feet. I would not wish to repeat it, with or especially without a helmet. The way I see it, if you choose to ride without a helmet on a vehicle which offers no structural protection that's your choice, but your choice should not affect my insurance rates or coverage.
IQ, vision including peripheral, common sense, and skills tests SHOULD be mandatory for anyone seeking a driver's license. Licenses should be revoked for any cyclist who drives up the lane markers or on the shoulders. Those actions create negative attitudes toward bikers, who have enough issues to contend with and don't stand a chance in a road rage incident. In our area, it seems to be mostly rice-rocket pilots who pull these stunts.
I was cut off in my car today by a van who found himself in the wrong lane and without signalling moved directly left into my lane. Had I not been aware and had the opportunity to move out of my lane, I would have been sideswiped.
As I have many miles of cycle experience including cross country and long distance commutes which resulted in two collision avoidance maneuvers that left me scarred, I know it's never safe on the road. And I am certain it is less safe now than it was 15 years ago when I last rode daily.
My thoughts are with Larry's family.

A helmet would not have mattered in this case. According to the coroner, his back, ribs, and internal organs were shattered on impact, killing him instantly.
God bless my friend. Happy hunting with the Great Spirit.
It's nice to see the respect and outpouring of support over on PY with what has happened. I was especially moved seeing his sister's postings on the site. I hope that seeing the "family" that Larry had on PY brings her and the remaining members of their family comfort at this time.
