Got a really sweet deal on 15x8 aftermarket alloys, question is - what size tires will best fit? I've got a '68 bird with stock ride height. I am thinking 265/50r15 on the back and 225/60r15 on the front but I am hoping get some input from those of you who have "been there, done that" Appreciate any help I can get!!!
Just bought some 15x8 torq thrust II's with 3.75" backspacing. Put some 255/60r15's on the rear and some 215/60r15's on the front. Combo works well. You need to be careful with the width on the front tire because it will bind against the frame when you make a hard turn and will rub the fender well on heavy bumps. You can go with a wider tire but need to adjust the rim backspacing accordingly. Hope this helps.
My 68 coupe has 15x8 on back (not sure offset?) with 245/60/15 BFGs. 15x7 on front with 215/65/15. Back tires will rub the outer lip of the wheel well on a dip in the road. Fronts are fine. I have new multi leafs in the back, but still will rub a little.
knuts, sounds like you have a little too much back spacing. You could roll the inner edge of the fender lip to alleviate the rubbing problem. I would recommend lining the top edge of the fender well opening with masking tape, get a wooden baseball bat, slide it in, angled between the top of the tire and the wheel well, have someone sit on the rear quarter, while someone drives the car forward slowly, rolling the bat along the inside of the fender well, thus rolling the inner edge up. Repeat until you get the desired clearance. Problem solved!
I've heard that before, but I forgot to do it before it went in for paint. Now I'm a little scared to! I did roll them a little and it's not too bad. But Thanks!
