Hey just did a complete restore on the engine of my 68 Firebird, Pontiac 350. But we can not get it to spark at all. Providing we have all the wires hooked up right what else would make it from not sparking? Thanks
If you have the plug wires set up and rotor close to #1 you can static time it by turning the ignition key to the "on position. Have plug wire terminal exposed or use a screwdriver to hold close to ground source on engine and turn distributor while watching for a spark. Once you see a spark you are lined up on TDC and the engine should at least start. Also make sure you have the plug wires going in the proper direction (counterclockwise). Wire that is along the firewall goes to + side of coil, dist. lead to - side. Hope this helps!
Check the points - if you are using an original distributer. Make sure you have the correct point gap. Also check the capacitor and the coil to make sure they are hooked up and functioning properly.
Not much else to prevent you from getting fire to the plugs. Check the basics first - especially after a rebuild.
180 degrees backwards must refer to having your timing mark set where the #1 piston is at TDC on the exhaust stroke. To set it right, you have to be at TDC on the compression stroke.
Another thing to check on your no spark problem: Is this newly restored engine grounded? Did you run a ground strap from the block to the chassis? Did you run one from the cylinder head to the firewall?
Ok it is at TDC everything is grounded but still nothing. We think the wiring must be screwed up or something. The wiring isn't stock and it is a HEI distributor. So all the wiring diagram's I have don't help much. Anyone care to throw me a bone here and maybe help me figure this out? Oh did I mention that I hate wiring.
so this is a HEI dist. The coil is good and cap. check the module i blew this every couple months in my 74. If not that check your power lead to cap if not that check that the coil is good ive bought new and thet were junk petronics. good luck
Replaced the module and coil. Have power going to the lead. It is all grounded good and still nothing. I don't have my hood on and I have my tach on my hood so I don't have that plugged in the tach spot beside the battery power on the distributor would that matter?
do you have power at cranking but not at run if so your power source is wrong you need to have 12 volts when key is cranking and in run position I had that when installing my hei
