O.K. Now I know it's in the speedo/gauges assem. when I pulled it out a little the problem fixed itself. Now I fig. there's a loose wire back there somewhere. Is it easy to pull the assem. out ? Any tip's ?
It's fairly easy Doug. You will need to remove the screws for the guage panel, remove the steering column covers and drop the steering column. Then unplug the harness and high beam light from the guages and the whole thing should come out.

Forgot to mention Doug, you will also need to disconnect the speedo cable to remove the entire unit as well.

O.K. I pulled the gauge unit and it seem's when I take a test light from grd. to the metal on the back of the gauge assem. It lights up now I'm thinking that the metal panel is now hot when it shouldn't be right ?
I alway's get freaked out whenever there's a problem with the bird.
Your headlight switch is grounded through a metal wire or small metal strap, the ground contact is the center screw in the top of the guage cluster, you MUST have a screw in that hole or the headlights will not work correctly. The screw must pass through the small loop of wire that acts as the ground for the lights.
O.k. I'll look at that, I forgot to mention that when I grd. out the cluster against the steering column the gauges go back to normal like they should.
I have a simular problem. this is my first time on the site. I replaced my under dash harness. Now when I pull the light switch to parking lights the front ones don't work and the inside indicators come on bright? I looked at connections. Any Idea
ALL screws holding that cluster assembly in must be proper metal content and proper length, and ALL installed. Look at the back of the assembly and its pretty obvious why.
Many of you will recall that my gauges, lights, turn signal switches went wacko a few years back after I had removed the cluster for cleaning and repaint. Turned out it was ALL due to one simple screw not making proper ground contact!
