ive seen these windows with the firebird emblem stamped in the lower front corner. are these the factory windows or special options. does anyone know where i can find a pair? thanks for the info!!
Those bird figures are etched in the glass, not stamped. They were factory options for '68.

Dear sir The first response that you received is correct the emblems are etched in the glass. I am under the understanding that they were only put on the first few hundred cars of the assembly line in 68 before they ran out. I dont believe they were an option, at any rate they are very rare. I have one for the right side but I dont think I am willing to part with it.
There is a lot of mystery and speculation on what cars recieved the Bird glass. But there has been no evidence as to specific options, or packages. There are early 68 cars with and with out. And the latest 68 I've heard that came with them was produced in July of 68 I believe.
It's not quite an actual etching process, (From what I've been told by professionals, you cannot properly etch tempered glass) if you look close, and study them, it's more like a screen printing process, that is then baked... They are actually white, not etched. I'm not positive of the actual process, but know some one who is.
Rumor has it they were produced by another company and subcontracted to do this... but then again... there are all kinds of rumors going around about this subject!
I'm going to make repros in Vinyl Graphics material in reverse, and apply them to the inside of the window. The window fuzzys should not damage them for quite some time, and if they do, I can replace them. BUT... mine is a 67 with the wing windows, so it's not like I'm trying to fool anyone!
Just one mans idea on how to recreate the look at an afordable price...
I have a 68 ohc that has them. the car has the deluxe interior package if that makes any differnce. They are very nice looking and my car was 6031 produced at the ohio plant.
Here is some feedback from John who has been researching this issue for some time:
...What we need is some conclusive evidence (first hand knowledge, internal memo, bulletin, etc) that explains why this image was applied and what factor determined which vehicles at Lordstown during the period Aug. '67 -thru- approx. Mar. '68 received this special glass. So far, none of the research has been able to identify the selection criteria. Even the Fisher Body Broadcast Copy contains no codes for selecting the 'Bird' glass. It's almost as if they were just mixed in with regular glass and installed according to Broadcast based on a Clear or Tinted build order.
We know for sure that it wasn't:
1) A special option (nothing on the Order Form). 2) Connected to any specific option, style or engine combo. 3) Exclusive to just early production Firebirds as several have been found on cars produced as late as March (some say even June) of '68. 4) Not used on '67 or '69 Firebirds or Van Nuys cars. 5) Unlikely that any cars ever left the plant with the 'Bird' image on only one side (though some claim this to be the case).
I too have spoke with former assy plant workers from Lordstown. They recall this special glass but have no recollection of a selection process to determine which cars received it.
It will remain a mystery! - Brett - 67 Drop Top 455!
