Can anyone help me figure out why my shift linkage always gets stuck in 2nd gear? I have a '68 400/4spd/3:55 posi car, and it has the original Hurst Competition Plus shifter. I have adjusted the linkage to death (place shifter in neutral, align the 3 plates that attach to the rods with a nail), I have replaced the bushings, I have lubed the shifter, yet it has always been hit or miss shifting to third and often my shifter will get stuck in second and will not come out no matter how hard you push inside the car on the shifter. I have to park and shut the car off and get under the car to move the linkage out of second. This situation makes my restored baby undriveable. Anyone with experience on this? Thanks ahead of time. Your shifter needs to be rebuilt. I had the same problem, but after a rebuild...smooth shifting. Several parts suppliers offer this service..Y1 does or did.
High Performance Pontiac Magazine (or it could've been Pontiac Enthusiast) ran an article about that in specific. It was within the past few months. Or you can send it off to be rebuilt.
