I'll be heading to coastal California (near Bodega Bay) this fall for a couple of weeks of work. I hope to squeeze in a fishing excursion. Can anyone suggest what the best sport and table fare would be for a small boat charter? I've heard lingcod, rockfish, vermillion, salmon and albacore are targets but I'm not familiar with the first three, at least by those names. And I've had fresh tuna, but never albacore, how is it on the grill?
And of course I'd enjoy meeting with anyone who may live in the area...

I have a High School friend who is a diver and pretty much lives in the water... but also live in that area... I'll see if I can get some info from him if I can catch him? How soon are you headed that way?
Vikki, Forget that salt(ick)water fishing. Jump in a car and head for the Redding/Burney area for some of the best trout fishing in the world on Hat Creek. I've a neighbor that runs a charter boat out of the SF bay. I'll ask him if he has any recommendations on boats out of Bodega. There's also Ft Bragg not far up the coast. There's quite a few boats go out of there. If you want to, check driveonline.com/western region, for a list of car events while your here. All Pont show on the 14th in Vacaville. Probably 1 1/2 hrs one way from the coast.
I really enjoy trout and salmon fishing. I do that here in Michigan and Ontario whenever I have a chance. But Redding is a long way from Occidental, and I won't have a car while I am there.
I'm lodging with friends and helping with their house restoration, it was a unique transplant of an 1831 Michigan historic house to Occidental that I did a few years ago. I will have, at most, eight hours or so to wander during my stay. The rest of the time I will be working, sampling wines, and socializing with their friends. And talking cars...they have a Maserati Bora, an Austin Healy, and 3 Lotus Elans; a close friend of theirs has a collection of nearly 50 classic cars. So it won't be all work.
I'll check out the links! I'll miss the show, I won't be arriving until late on the 17th.

I'm in central CA, unfortunately quite a ways from Occidental myself. My whole family are fishermen but mostly black bass catch-n-release folks. LOL - not much table fare there but I hope you enjoy your trip and the weather and good luck fishin'!
I was wondering if you were going to check on the house... how far along are they? Is it finish work now? That was quite the story behind that place. Quite an undertaking!
Hey Vikki, My neighbor says a good boat out of Bodega is the New Sea Angler. I guess the guy's got a pretty good rep(according to Jim). Jim says they have been killing on cod lately around Pt Reyes and out at the Fairlons(sp?). Good luck.
