I found a 1964 pontiac catalina locally that is suppose to have the original engine in it. The only thing the owner can tell me is it is a v-8. If I go look at it what do I look for to determine the actual size?

Look at the two-letter block code on the front of the block. Then match it up to this list:

http://www.teufert.net/pontiac/engcodes.htm

My bad ... they were still using 3-character codes in '64. If it is a two-letter code, you will also need the date code from the block. (Back by the distributor.)
