Hi, I have a 69 Firebird with a stock column shifter, that I'm converting to a floor shifter. I recently purchased an original center console, shifter and column, but need to know where to mount the brackets on the center hump and also how far back to come from the firewall. Would a shop manual have this info? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated! Firefly
Welcome Firefly! You are in luck. GM put dimples in the factory sheet metal where the bolt holes would be for the shifter brackets. This made it so the assembly line workers didn't have to measure. Pull back the carpet and look for the tiny dents.
Firefly, there are a few options if you aren't trying to keep your '69 looking stock. If you are trying to keep it looking original, we can provide pics to set you straight.

Hey Glider, I found an original center console and 350 Turbo shifter on ebay, which I recently purchased. Hopefully, it works out. My current bird has a column shifter. Some have told me to keep it original, because it is a tilt column, but I'm a floor shifter kinda-guy..haha! Firefly
I would be interested in some pics and auto shifter ideas for a factory look. The shifter I was going to use is out of a 67, so I here I would need a shifter plate out of a 67 to go on my 68 console and I dont think I could get one to look rite on the wood grain. Any comments or pics would be great, thanks for the compliment.
Thanks for the offer Nashville68bird. I'm trying to keep the car stock for the most part, although, I'm changing the interior from standard to deluxe and color from gold to blue. I have a handful of work ahead. Currently I have all the interior out down to bare metal..yikes!
Hey Glider, Thanks for the note. If you're interested in some photo ideas, it is amazing what you can find by searching ebay. On any given day, I have found several original floor shifter/center console deals available to purchase, or just to get ideas on what you want! Awesome firebird you have there, by the way! Great colors.
The original column shifter cars are indeed getting more scarce as the years go by, there is no question about that.
At some point those original cars will be sought after and desired for that column shift "option". If I had one I'd be very careful how I modified it, and keep ALL parts and pieces.
Just my 2 bits.

Hey John, That sounds like a plan, but my Firebird is not quite street legal, yet..haha...I still need to replace the wiring harness and re-install the lights etc. Funny, I bought this Firebird about a year ago, in fairly rough shape as a weekend fixer-upper, daily driver...well...it has now become essentially a ground up restoration..so much for those original plans..haha! Your Firebird looks great! Firefly.
