I am considering installing an instrument cluster from a 1995 trans am in my 1969 firebird. Does anyone know if it will work without the computer? Can I just buy the sending units for a 1995 and install on my 1969 and wire up the newer instrument cluster or does the cluster have to recieve its signals through the computer? Thanks, David
I don't think the speedo will work w/o a speed sensor. I could be wrong. Check if the 95 has a speedo cable. I dont think it does. You could put in a 700r4 w/ speed sensor. Other than that, I don't know about the others. I would think the fuel/oil/alt/temp/whatever could be hooked up otherwise.
Scott, you're right on all counts, needs a speed sensor that plugs in between the end of the speedo cable and the trans, and the right senders for the gauges. The computer gets its numbers from dedicated sensors.
I am going to install a 200 4r transmission. The speedometer is electronic and will require the speed sensor. I have not been able to find a wiring schematic to determine if the sensors send signals to the computer and the computer sends a signal to the gauges or if the sensors just send a singal to both the computer and the gauges. Where does the tachometer receive its signal?
Usually. Oil pressure and temperature senders (as opposed to sensors - make sure your parts man gets you the right parts) are for the gauges, volts are measured directly, and the tach signal from the distributor is likely shared by the gauge and the computer. I'll have to check the last one.
do more research on this cluster some of the later model clusters require other module for communications purposes for serial data i cant remember if 95 is one of them.but be careful before you start carving your car up for something that will cost tons to make right.
