One of my COOLEST childhood memories is helping my dad build an outhouse for my mom.
Every summer we'd drive 600 miles north to camp out for a week (or more) on a ranch that belonged to friends of my parents. This was the coolest place for a kid to grow up - except as a teenager. (It's in the center of the Emerald Triangle.) Anyway, we would always camp down in this lush canyon along a creek that was always full of foot-long rainbow trout. Always shady, few bugs and really, really serene.
My mom, who is a european city girl, just hated the idea of walking into the woods with a roll of toilet paper and copping a squat. So my dad decided to build her an outhouse. All the kids helped (me, my bro and sis). We built this totally cool outhouse. Pitched roof, crescent moon in the door ... the whole nine yards.
Anyway, we named it "Butch" and dad christened it.
Here I sit - over 35 years later - and I can picture it like I'm looking at it in my back yard. That ranch was an amazing place. I learned to shoot there. I learned to drive there. I learned to ride motorcycles there. I learned to patch road rash and give myself stitches, too. It's also the place I found my three Judges in 1982. I learned to drive a buldozer there, too.
Old Fart, I owe you a six pack. This is going to be tonight's topic at the Thanksgiving table. Welcome back, man. And thanks.
