I'm sure this can't be right but someone drilled two 3/32" holes in the base plate that start in the primary bores above the butterfly valves and exit right out the sides of the base plate. Not only does this let unfiltered air into the engine but I can see no purpose for the holes. Has anybody ever heard of this modification before. Just thought I'd ask before I plug them. Seems like the only thing they would accomplish would be to create a vacuum leak?? I might have understood it if they were below the butterfly valves. This is a 69 qjet 7029261. Thanks

I bet it's rejetted so big that they couldn't get enough air into the mix. Probably someone's secret tuning technique.

I talked to Cliff Ruggles yesterday. He said he has seen just one carberator with these holes, and suggested that I plug them. If I find that I need bypass air after plugging them, then add the bypass air internally. After I plug them and get the carb back on I'll post a followup with the results. Thanks to all that responded....steve

Very interesting. Cliff saw no positive racer angle on those holes? I figured it must have been a short-cut mod for an old racer.

Just a little FYI for y'all: Every OHC with a Q-Jet has the base plate with those holes in it.

From their position, tbey appear to be an off-idle air bleed. They probably become ineffective as the throttle opens.
