Hey... my bird sleeps in the Garage next to MY bug....
Nothing wrong with that...
Very kool John, your son looks quite proud of his Poncho wheels... nothing wrong with spending some time with your son, I'm sure the bird can understand that! Then more he knows about cars and the more he appreciates them, the better care he'll take of the bird when it's time to pass it down to him!
'Firsts' are great, aren't they? I wonder what's next for the son? Maybe another first? LOL First car date? Oh yeah, I'm living in the past! Hey, that bug is cool! Looks like it's ready for a safari.
I already have my son's 1st car. It is/was my dad's 78 El Camino (GMC Sprint) I drove it at times in HS when I was doing the body and paint on my second Firebird (the 68), while I was swapping motors in my first firebird (the 67, My 1st car) So it has history for me, and it's his grandfathers car... so it will have a special history for him too.
But I'll have to wait a while... he's only 5. So enjoy it while you can John... I'm sure he'll become more and more independent from now on...
Thanks Jim, it was my first resto after College. Broke, not much for a job, so a Bug was good cheap fun at the time, now even the VW's are high priced! That resto is about 20 years old now! Man!
I'll have to expand the Garage soon so no one has to sleep outside... especially up here in the Great North Wet!
My son loves El Caminos. Mama doesn't though and they have pretty limited traction in the winter around here. We were looking almost exclusively at late model GP coupes. They are safe, not too expensive to buy or insure, and cool enough that the kid can be proud of what he's driving. He'll take better care of it then.
The GP only has 34,000 miles on it now, and we're trying to prevent cancer by coating the pinch welds with POR-15, and coating the inside of the door panels with 711 spray. Johnny was under the car for hours yesterday.
There are sooo many GP websites and modifications for these cars. We broke the bank with the purchase of the car though and all of that will have to wait.
Great tradition you are starting with your son, as I have done with mine. Tried to get him to like the new Avalanche but he prefers the bird whenever he's home from the Air Force.
Go figure!? Keep pounding on the boy about being a gentleman, no drinking and driving, do the right thing, etc. He'll be fine.
