So, since I had to replace the carb on my '68 400, I decided to replace the cam and timing gears and intake...you know how it goes.
I settle on the E'brock performer intake and an E'brock 750cfm electric choke carb. Everything is going together nicely( after Lunati sends the right gear set. Apparently, they can't tell the dif between BB Chevy and Pontiac)...until I attempt to connect the fuel line to the carb. I bought the E'brock fuel feed and filter designed for this carb. Doesn't fit. The intake runners are too high and get in the way. So, I buy an E'brock "banjo" fitting. Doesn't fit. The body of the fitting is too thick and won't clear the carb body. Then I decide to bend the first fuel feed to clear the intake runners, and mount the filter closer to the pump. This worked OK.
They say you need a "8015" adapter to mount the throttle bracket to the manifold. But, you have to re-drill, cut, and bend the bracket to fit, even with this adapter!...and the adapter puts this bracket too close to the carb. The bracket WILL fit BETTER without the adapter and modification. So, we got that figured out.
Crank it up, break in the cam, then try to tune the carb. Can't get it right. (1 problem was that the new wires wouldn't stay plugged into the dist.cap. Amazing how much this effects idle quality and power. Fixed that) Changed jets and metering rods...still can't get it tuned. Then, I happen to notice that I am supposed to use an adapter to mount the E'brock Performer carb onto an E'brock Performer intake that the E'brock fuel feed and E'brock banjo fitting will not fit!!!! An dthis adapter was supposed to come with the intake.
Is it me, or is there a problem here??!!
OK. I feel better now.

Wow, I guess e'brock parts aren't easily compatible with e'brock parts. I'm sure you will eventually get the puzzle put together. I have a performer intake with a 1405, bought the car that way, works great, thanks for warning me not to mess with it.
Try this one. Edlebrock dual 4 intake, two Carter carbs on RA III heads. You cannot buy parts to make the stock cable work with dual carbs. The bracket fits nicely though. I even called Edlebrock and asked them about buying their progressive linkage and new carbs, they gave me the adapter bracket number and said maybe. Huh? Why would you sell parts that can't be bolted on? The cable reaches the center point between the carbs so I made a rather primitive linkage years ago.
I still plan to keep the old Carters, just because you don't see them anymore. Now during resto I going to switch the front-rear carbs around and try to fix it and make some sort of better quality and progressive linkage. Front carb has a larger side plate so I can mount the back carb linkage higher to work out the linkage ratio.
Wanting a Custom fit in an off the rack world.
I don't have time for a job, I just need the money.
Edelbrock can be very helpful. For example; When I was building a 428 I talked on the phone with a tech rep and he set me up with a package that included; Cam and lifters, timing chain and gear, intake and carb. The engine ran perfectly without any carb adjustment, adaptors ect.
Greg, you are doing just fine! Hang in there and don't get mad!
When you say "can't get it tuned right", what indications are you using to come to that conclusion? As you well know, I've screwed with several EB carbs and intakes over the years.
Make sure you are keeping good notes on EVERYTHING.
