Don't laugh at me please...laugh with me. I needed a car for the wife to beat around in and save the paint on her SSE Bonneville. Long about the same time, I have this 90 year old customer that was interested in selling his '77 Volvo 244DL. It had been well maintained (but not cleaned alot) in it's 220+K life, so for the poultry some of 600 ice cubes, I've got a Volvo. All this thing needs is a greatful dead sticker. I'll admit, it takes me back to my VW bug days, although at this age I felt I needed to be able to drive without scraping the inside of the windshield. I think it will be a lot of fun. If anyone can offer advise on this svelt sveety, it would be appreciated.
Greg ,what advice do you need? I`ve been driving Volvos for over 35 yrs, just bought a Caddy 4 yrs ago, will go back to Volvo in the spring... probably a C70? 244 Dls are good old iron....I`ve had 142`s 144`s , 145`s, 244`s 242`s,245`s, 740`s,745`s,760``s 780`, pv 544`s,p1800, tp21s, laplanders...you name it...my dad was the one who brought Volvo to the US in 56.... I`ve got friends who are Volvo mechanics....
so , whats the question?
at 240k its not worn out...of course depends on service etc..but if maintained ,it will go....the record holder is a 2 mil miler p1800
and YES theres a few Swedes in the house....a few more than I...Vikingfirebird,Snowcruiser, just to name 2, plus Hansi, 1/2 Swede (Norwegian..lol)
and EBay sells Greatful Dead stickers , my son has one on his Tahoe!
If you want some fun ,its a great car to take out the 4 cyl, stick a Ford 302 in! and add the Volvo "diesel" emblem to the rear!
Thanks Bjorn for the support. At this time the car doesn't really need anything to be fully functional. In fact when Wanda came home yesterday she exclaimed how she just loves her new car. The brake hoses are just starting to crack so we're putting new ones on as we speak. The brake pads are mighty noisey, but the ones on there don't have shims on them and the new ones do. The edges on the new pads are chamfered too, so I'm comfortable that will address that issue. Fuel pump(s) are noisey...lots of humming. In the domestic world that would be indicative of a weak pump. I got to looking and found that the frame mounted pump is not well secured nor isolated at all. It has dealer installed A/C, but its not working as it should. I guess thats quite a list for being fully functional, but all that stuff is pretty much elective. What the car NEEDS is a radio. I spent a lot of the week end cleaning it up and it responded very well to that. It drives out and runs well for such a small engine. The old fellow that had it, bought it new and claims to have all the paperwork for the car that I am welcome to. All in all, I'm really pretty excited about tooling around in it. Just don't tell Fbody69. As for the 302, there is no way. What I have is a '67 Goat motor, complete with 670 heads that will transplant in it. LOL I WILL look you up when I have questions and truely appreciate your enthusiasm.
What ya go and do Greg? Join the blue ovals? Parked the Pontiac and got into a foreign car? Next you'll have a crown vic. Used Volvo, that's like a used..........
Greg 1) why I said 302 is because its skinnier than the Pontiac engine (and Chevy) fits easier...
2) if you look , you probably have the double hood springs...thats the ones that fit inside the Firebird hood sprrings to maka a Viagra hood ,IF your pontiac springs are sloppy!
and 3) squeeky brakes...usually if you drive it and hit the brakes HARD a few times ,that tends to go away....its brake dust
plus 4) if you install a Radio, you wont hear the squeeks and noisy stuff! LOL
Count me out. I despise them! Will never own a Volvo, or Saab for that matter. You´ve got to draw the line somewhere, eh? But, by all means, go on have fun with it, it is like Lego, or even DUPLO(BigLego) to work with, as it contains next to nothing ;-) They are used a lot in mud cross over here, cheap, big ugly and heavy so you can shove the beetles and other, more exotic competition off the track!
I must admit though, I got rid of the VW van and boughht me a ´86 C**** Monte Carlo SS for everyday transport. A bold move I dare to say, if you live over here. And, I swear, if there ever were a Grand Prix same age to be found I would have jumped at it. Honest to god!! So now at least I only own American cars!!! Would have taken that Eldo off your hands this spring, Bjorn, but I can´t afford the $ 25.000 of taxes to the government! NO kidding! Probably even more when 2007 arrives!!!!!
Now; anybody needs a decent guitarist/soundman/mechanic?!
well Greg sent me pics of his car..... guess where it was sold? Nils Sefeldt Volvo in Houston! My dads company sold that car new....
I`ve bought a few 200k plus Volvos, never had problems ,usually sold them 2,3 yrs later , with a profit! this one looks great, Guess Greg clenred it ,but from the one rear shot I saw its in nice shape!
