My question is are there any part numbers on an original pontiac formula steering wheel? Where would they be located and what would these numbers be. My 69 has on on it now and duz seem to show some age but not original to the car as phs shows deluxe wood wheel but I was trying to figure out if it was original or a repo. If it is an original was thinking of having it restored as I do like it but if a repo probably not worth it. Thanks for any help. Stephen

The Formula wheel was installed in '69s built 9/15/69 and later (due to delayed introduction of '70s). It replaced the Custom Sport (wood) Wheel and did not have a unique order code. If your Formula wheel is original, it should have round holes in the spokes and the 'bird with turned-down wings on the horn button.

I think you are right, Merv, that's why I want the pic. Terry's hooking me up w/ a wheel for my Bird, so I may have a Formula wheel Stephen can have instead of restoring an old one. The printer-copier thing isn't that hard to figure out. We just got ours yesterday & I can operate it so ANYONE can! Must've been typing @ the same time, Vikki. Anyway, if it's the same wheel you're still welcome to it, Stephen.
It duz have the round hols as you speak, the horn center cap is there but the emblem in the centeris missing there are holes in it for the embelm to be mounted. I seen in ames cataloge or one of those books where the repo centercap embelem has a sticky backing where original was mounted with tabs. Not sure on this but I swear I remember reading that. I will still post a pic of it later and see what you all think. Ohh I also see where the repos are suposed to have a "firmer" grip then the originals and this has a soft grip to it. I belive my phs did say custom sport wheel but figured that meant wood wheel. I will have to find the phs and check again. Stephen P.S. MERRY X-MAS

Ok I can't figure out what I am doing here to post an image. Wheel is stiched and not molded. Billing history on phs shows date of shipped 12/04/68 date of draft 12/24/68 date of production 12/04/68 also show STRG WHL-C/S price 50.55 code 462 someone please explain to me on how to post an image and I will try again later when I get pic of wheel

Car should have come with Custom Sport wood wheel. It's 9 months too early for Formula wheel. I am looking for an original '69 Formula wheel, if one becomes available.

If it's like photobucket you have to copy the one that says "URL" & paste it. Is this what your wheel looks like? (minus the wings up bird)the emblem has little nubs on it to line it up & is glued on the horn cover. Horn cover held on by metal prongs.
That is exactly the wheel James minus the bird embelm in the center as that is missing but horn button is there. It is stiched orund inner part of wheel but some of the stiching is comeing undone a little.

If you want it, you can have it for shipping cost. Probably be easier & cheaper than restoring yours. The discoloration in the pic is also in my lungs, it's paint dust from sanding. Anyway, Terry's hooking me up, so the least I can do is show my appreciation by passing it along.
James you got mail, maybe you can post pics for me. Vikki if later on down the road I decide to let this wheel go and look for a wood wheel and this turns out to be an original you will be first on my list to offer it to.

I like both the formula and that wheel Vikki just cant decide what looks better to me, ashame you can't have 2 steering colums in a car. Hopefully Jame will post those pics for me later and we can determin from there if mine looks to be original or not.

Don't mean to hijack but...Vikki where did you get the pic of the stacked gauges? 5500 redline. Just wontering if it was a OHC car or original to a V8?
Is there a repo of the correct "bird" for the center cap Vikki? it would be the wings down bird right? not the one in James's pic of the next gen bird. If not I am sure an original embelem would be hard to locate.
69 firebird 350 ho 4spd someday I'll get this thing on the road again
Yes, wings down would be correct. An original would be next to impossible to locate. They are not repro'd to the best of my knowledge. Only a few thousand cars were made with them, so it's probably not very high on the list of things to make. Ames carries the "wings up" style.
However...a clever individual could use clear acrylic resin and one of those nice mylar decals to make a passable facsimile.

Vikki, isn't the one at Ames correct? It says they have them for 69 to 81 formula wheels. That is unless they are trying to sell 1 item saying it's for all those years. I assumed if you state the year vehicle on your order form they'd send you your year.(and yes, I know what happens when you assume)
Vikki do you have a photo of the correct bird embelm so I could take a look at it. I had seen in eastwoods cataloge that they have a thing for molding your own embelms and such, may be something to look into.

Also if you look at the PHS on my car that James posted for me the last thing on there ADV.ASSN.COL code 041 what is that as I cant find it anywhere else on the forms they sent me. Was wondering if that meant power steering as my car is equiped with it.
69 firebird 350 ho 4spd someday I'll get this thing on the road again
No, 041 is a dealership association advertising fee.
I've checked my archives, I don't have one shot of the correct cap except for one Pontiac document. I did see one firsthand, in a TA convertible, but could not take photos.
The photo shown in the Dealer Brochure is of a prototype wheel, not the one that eventually made it onto the cars. This car has many dissimilarities to the production cars.
