Are we sure we are talking about an auto shifter or a manual here?

There was a great '68 Firebird website that I could have steered you to, but it is gone as of last week.
My '67 Firebird Service Manual supplement has a pretty decent diagram.
I'm pretty sure '67's and '68's had no steering column connection because those were only to lock the shifter when the steering column was locked (went along with the ignition key into the steering column as opposed to the dash)

All those (older at least) cars were made w/ column shifter , when you got the console shifter it only linked to the col. shifter set up.. , so in fact your col. shifter is being shifted by the comnsole shifter. For ALL the things to work properly you need the full col. shifter set up... I am missing the linkage and have it 'rigged' to work on my 69... Bjorn
Mmmm...not that way on my '67. The console shifter is linked directly to the tranny with a rod linkage assembly. No connection to the steering column whatsoever. That's also what the Service Manual and Factory Parts diagrams show.
The neutral safety switch is also mounted inside the shifter mechanism - not on the column.

Earlier I wanted to provide you this link below that has a great illustration of the '67 Firebird auto shifter. The site belongs to a fellow 'Bird owner and 1st Gen FB "L" list member and has great reference information. Unfortuately I read last week that he was having issues with his service provider and might pull the plug on his site. I am VERY happy to see it back up: \'67 - \'69 Shifters

While we are on the subject - does anybody have a trashed spare (read CHEAP) chrome lever and "T" setup for a '67 (minus the rest of the shifter)?
I have a NOS lever and "T" handle that I want to use, but I need to transfer the "guts" from another shifter. We are talking about the inner actuator rod, plastic tube, springs, end cap and the threaded collar that secures the "T" to the curved lever.
There are a couple of complete shifters on e-bay right now but the going rates are over $60 and I don't need most of the parts.
