Yeah, it seems like the trunk is where to put everything. I am in the process of doing a stereo in my convertible. I am keeping the original working radio in place so everything is going in the trunk. I have a detachable face stereo. The face will be kept in the console and will be wired to the stereo in the trunk. I would like to hear what Brett has for speaker set ups. I am kind of clueless.
Here are the basics of my system: Alpine head unit in the glove box Kenwood 4 channel amp in the trunk on the rear seat brace two 6x9 3 way speakers in custom enclosures to fire forward towards the area where the top folds down (oly place sound comes through relitively unobstructed) One 8" Kicker Free Air subn mounted on the rear seat brace two Aura Bass Shakers under the front Seats (25w each) Two 4x6 plate speakers in the stock Kick Panel location with stock grills one shallow 10" speaker to replace the stock front speaker.
I will be adding another amp to help out, but over all it sounds pretty good for being in a convertible with nothing visible!
I left my stock radio in place and mounted the new head unit under the dash, it fits snuggly between that and console. I picked up a plastic adapter for front and mounted 2 Coustic 4" co-ax speakers with original bracket. I mounted 2 Kenwood 6x9's behind the seat by cutting holes in the frame behind the seat (structurely, maybe not the best to do, but I reasoned that it was relativily small surface area). These speaker fit in the the other brace well. It sounds ok. I plan to replace the 6x9's with 6.5 components with external mounted tweeters. A serious stereo friend wants me to mount a single 12" in the trunk, which could be removed at shows, etc. The speakers up front sound real good, but not much separation.
I like the head unit location, works with a remote, ties in well with dash and console. With removable face, you can take with you.
I had one of those removable face plates in an other car awhile back,it was just that after many removals , it started to have connection problems.... Bjorn
