ok, well, there is a guy about 20 miles from me. had a 455 for sale it was rebuilt 5 years ago, and sat with out being sealed up. motor wouldn't turn at first.
I believe it to be a 1970 yh 455 motor with 15 coded heads. small valve 196 intake, but high compression 10.5 to 1 360HP engine. The crank has been replaced as has the cam. The cam is a GM part number 540233 which wallace racing website says its from a 1961-62 389 SD 8 308 112 .405" .447" 83 312 115 .404" .446" Dur. CL 1.50:1 1.65:1 O.L. Dur. CL 1.50:1 1.65:1 CWC is also on the cam
The heads look to have been redone but with all stock components. The pistons are .30 over now the wierd part.. check out the casting numbers should be like 9979146 but it really is __7_9146
crank main ends are part number 9799143 in the front the rear crank is 9799147 both of those are 2 bolts.. the rest are 4 bolt mains part number 9799145
crank has the number of 496453, it appears new also
So, I basicly paid $700 for this block, 15 heads, edelbrock performer intake, the cool serpentine aluminum pully and bracket system ($400) new headders (aluminum) MSD Billet distributer. I think If I can use the short block out of it, the its money well spent. I'll throw my comp cam extreme energy 274 that I already have and the edelbrock 87 cc aluminum heads, roller rockers new waterpump.
I was just wondering, with this 389 SD cam and the 15 heads, how would it run?
Any idea on the casting missing some 9s ?? can anyone tell me what brand pistons these are?
The alternator still has a v-belt pulley on it, so it looks like the transformation to serpentine wasn't quite done yet.
You'll need one of these alternators:
By the way ... if you want a serpentine set-up, most of you can order a complete kit from March for your V-8. The components in this "kit" are for a Ford, a Mopar, a SBC and a BBC, plus one generic Moroso spacer. You should see the pile of parts we went through that didn't fit.
actually, I had the rest of the pullys and parts in a box so its complete
I'm going to go ahead and use the short block the way it is. I'll just clean up any little surface problems it has, then put in the comp extreme energy cam 274# Edelbrock complete 87cc heads, hi-tech chrome-moley pushrods, comp cams aluminum roller rockers, edelbrock performer intake, aluminum high flow water pump, and speed demon 750 carb with the msd dristributer. Then I'm done.
When I finish with my front disc brake conversion, the motor will go back in and i can start working on the body while I smoke off em old tires
With the cam/head selection in limbo, if I had the engine, I would clean it up, slap it together and take a stab at it. Looks as if it's pretty clean.
What's up with the alternator? I don't see how you can cure the problem with simply mounting a pully on the alternator, probabaly the reason why it's still in a "box." The alt sits back too far. The solution would be an extended pully, but that's not mechanically sound because you are creating a long fulcrum point, causing abnormal pressure on the alternator shaft.
The only soultion would be to modify the bracket to set the alternator out, or get a redesigned one. Even with that, I don't know how well the sytem would behave with a serptine belt because of the relation of the alt and ps pump. You would have to do some homework and see how well other conversions worked out.
its a purchased package from marchperf.com it lines up
The thing is, I have edelbrock 87 complete aluminum heads and a comp cam extreme energy 274 grind already. With the larger valved, aluminum round port style high flow heads and that cam, its gotta be better then these 15s and that cam. the cam seems really wierd according to its specs
why would you put a 389 cam in a 455?

Long duration perhaps to help out with the small valves??, .447/.446 lift at .50 with 1.65 rockers
