my harmonic balancer broke and I cant afford a brand new one... what engines should I look for to pull one off of? what would fit a 73 455? anyone have a spare one? let me know, later.
After looking at the balancers on the pontiacs outside, I cannot tell a diffrence between the 350/400/455. My guess would be to go to a junk yard and look for an old full size pontiac or grand prix with a 400 or 455 and pull it off .You can tell which motor it is by head number castings which are usually still visible, and the firebirds at junk yards usually dont have engines but can give it a shot. Might check ebay too... be sure to replace that front seal while youre at it, pretty sure the seals are cheap.
One thing to be concerned with in regards to an "old" balancer: As they get older, the rubber ring slowly "slips," and the timing mark will slowly move. (Tt goes slightly reatrded as it slips.) It's a tough thing to check for on a motor that's not taken apart, but something to keep in mind. If the engine runs better with a few extra degrees of advance, that may be the reason.
its not that I think its broken... my timing chain slipped a while ago.. the chain broke the timing chain cover... so I baught a new one off a freind, then when I pulled the balancer off it was broken off at the groove for the woodruff key so I know its broken and theres no way to get around buying a new one I have the pictures, since many people dont beleive me. anyways thanx for the help guys, you guys have helped me sooo much with my firebird.
Kris, I'll check around locally here in the club and see if we can find you one close by, and soon!
Let me know if you get one before I get back to you? I'll be out of town from Friday till Sunday... so if we don't find one before that, I'll get back with you early next week!
At least you didn't say you'd try to sneak it in my Luggage! That wouldn't go over well with the wife and lil guy having to bail me out of jail or something.... Lol...
