Looking at a remanufactured 428 long block out of a 68 Pontiac. What if any issues might there be installing it in a 68 Firebird? Engine company says there wouldn't be any issues.

There is no replacment for displacment. Chunk in a stock like build, hit the key, and run the dogcrap out of it for the next few problem free decades. Seeing that it's a toy rather then the main means, there is a good chance that we'll crap out before the engine.
Now the company emailed back saying they had to verify the 428 LB they advertised is in stock.
Let me tell you all, based on all the phone calls and emails I've done over the past month our V-8 67-69 blocks are getting hard to find in good rebuildable condition. These "remanufacture" companies have very few on the shelf. Butler has 50-60 on the shelf, but all are sold.

Some of these reman companies will reman your engine. I had Acurate transmission reman my 4 speed for my TA. They did it for half the price a local shop quoted. It also gets you around having to come up with a core. Something to think about.
Jim, they ALL (nine of them and counting) have offered great deals on rebuilding my block, with pretty reasonable pick-up and delivery rates right to the house. Most of them are out of Pontiac V-8 cores at the moment.
They say the last two years have seen increased demand by 300 percent. That should be good news for us Pontiac owners I suppose.
Warranties range from 3 to 7 years. Two even have the HO package which meets or exceeds to original '68 400 standards.
I'm having alot of fun researching these companies, and have learned a bit of the trade as well.

All joking aside; you can actually hear the difference between a stock 400 and a stock 428. 400 has a 3.75 and a 428 has a 4.00 stroke. When they went to the 4.21 stroke in the 455, not as much improvement was made. I think 4.0 is the 'sweet spot'.

Also is the fact that it's a little more 'exotic' to have a 428....
-I actually believe it was the only engine that was painted orange, in pontiacs...-not that it matters..
Thanks for all the 428 posts, the block is obviously superb and unique.
Special thanks to those of you that pointed out the "rare" info on the engine.
I have asked NASA, MTV and the WEEGIE BOARD Company to provide supporting documentation. Ironically, all three organizations have agreed to share their secrets. Whether or not I can share them with you is another story.
In the meantime, continue to stuff whatever green looking weed or grassy purchase you happen to spend your money upon into your smoking pipe or other apparatus. We that prefer not to indulge LOVE those that do.

A FGF with a 400 hood but with 428 Emblems on the hood scoops and trunk lid to me screams (look out) I wonder why when people see a 390 under the hood of a Mustang they go WOW, or even a 396 in a Camaro? But a 400, 428 or 455 in a Firebird, it's ho-hum, just another engine.
Guess maybe because Pontiac knew how to fit big engines in small cars without looking shoe horned in, they started it all to begin with anyway. Show don't make go, Pontiac figured that out years ago.
Wanting a Custom fit in an off the rack world.
I don't have time for a job, I just need the money.
you "probably" would have to re drill the holes, dont think they match up...at least I know the 350 and the 400 holes dont match....
Probably so, I bought all new emblems when my car was in the shop to make sure all holes lined up before painting, that's when I came close, but I went back 400 on the hood, plus I added the 400 to the trunk.
Can the Repo Hocky sticks be added to a standrd Grill? The Beak emblem I may leave off.

I just Googled 421 Super Duty. Wow. Just wow. We ooo and aah at the Ram Air motors for Firebirds, and people pay huge $ for RA, but these 421s and 428s were quietly pumping out huge horsepower.

If I had known what I know today ,when I was looking for my bird.....
I flew up to St Louis to look at a 68 vert.400,..... 400 hood, freshly painted Verdoro green , parchment interior and top...beatiful car...the colors I was really looking for...I was told it had a 428 in it...I was all eager..flew there to buy it, but had a return ticket,,...my plan was to drive it back...
but first problem I had was ,it was a column shift..."you didnt ask" was the sellers answer when I said "its a co;lumn shift"? ,but it had bucket seats... second , engine was tired, wouldnt even spin the tires...(or maybe the tranny?)
but had I known....the cars was negotiated to $13,000, I should have taken it... was worried about the engine ,but could have had it rebuilt ($1500-2000?)...could easily have gotten a console with console shifter ($1000?)...had no idea then it basically is the same thing ,just re routed... so for $16,000 I could have had it, maybe...instead I bought the 69 for $8000 and fixed it for another $16k....
Bjorn, I heard that you could not get a bench seat in a conv no matter what shifter it came with. My 67 400 conv came with buckets and a columm shifter. ( I think it was Q who said it originaly).
Bjorn When did you go to ST. Louis? I may have that car! I put a 428 in it, with a console & floor shifter and a new 2004r. I bought it in August of 2001. Now have around $30k into it. Loren
I have to agree Nash, IF, you fins a 421, or a 428 for a resonable price, snatch it up! They are great motors with the best of both worlds so to speak.
I had a 421 in my 68 bird and it was by far the fastest car I've had to date. I never lost in that car, and all my buddies from High School still love to talk about the old days in the bird, and how they could never catch it... best smoke shows... you name it. Man I wish I still had it...
They make aftermarket 428 & 455 emblems to fit the stock pin hols of the 400 hood etc. Personally, I like having the 400 emblems with the 455 lurking under the hood, and for the most part, no one knows the difference if they don't start checking the numbers. Even my Performer intake has all the Edelbrock marking ground off, and it's painted to look stock. I love the modifications, but like it to appear stock...
Anyway, like I said, if given the opportunity, jump on it if it's a resonable deal.
