I recently bought a good used 69 automatice console. The shifter plate is not attached to the console currently. There are two holes at the top and bottom of the shifter plate that I assume are used to attach it to the console. However, I can't see where it actually attaches to the console itself. Is there some sort of mounting clip needed to actually attach the plate to the console? Any help appreciated. Thanks.
The plate was originally attached with clips that are tacked to the back of the plate. Usually, these are broken off. The usual fix is to drill holes in the cover and attach with screws. I've seen it done two ways; They drill holes in the metal cover of the shifter assembly for the screws to thread into. Another way is to drill the holes in the location of the original clips. You can then put the type of threaded plastic clips that you see on a license plate bracket in the original clip holes. The screws that hold the plate will thread into these. So, the question to your answer(LOL), is that it fastens to the shifter assembly, not the console.
I see, so the next step would be to get ahold of an original automatice shifter assembly, which I was planning to do anyway. Well, now I can get started on disassembling the console so I can restore it and start looking for a auto shifter assembly, too.
If you find the correct shifter they are like a 'slap stick'. Drop it down into 1st and slap it ahead and slightly to the right and it goes to 2nd. Same for 3rd.
First off, welcome to FGF.This is what the clips look like.If you are to purchase a cover, make sure it has them and that they are secure as many out there do not. They appear to be riveted on and can come loose after many removals so ideally you want them to be snug when/if you do buy another.

I was showing a picture of what the clips look like and where they are located on the backside.I've seen a "slapstick" cover once in person and the slot looks pretty wide compared to the picture of the one i posted. Is this a 69' only shifter and cover? The 68/69 consoles are the same and a 68' shifter should work so if you have a hard time finding one of these slapstick shifters and covers you may want to go the 68' route as there seems to be an abundance of them.
