My headliner needs to be redone on my car, but i would like to make a little customization... I've seen how to do headliner custom ideas using a headliner board, 1/4 in. thick foam and some material to form whatever you want ex. Flames.. I see that the first gens use headliner bows is there anyway to either switch it to a headliner board or if that's not possible to customize my interior, i was going to have the firebird symbol and the word firebird underneath it....
One way you could do this to get the same effect that they did, is uses your stock headliner. Get the material you want to use (make sure it's thin enough to make it work for sculpting) and get the foam. Cut the shapes as they did, you can use 3M Super Trim Adhesive (not the trim adhesive, but the Super) Spary the back of the foam, and the area it will cover on the headliner. Lay the foam in place, then spray tight around the edges of the foam where the material will have to be sculpted. and then spray the whole headliner area well (should take at least 2 cans) and then lay down your material, tucking it in tight to the sculpted areas. Then instal the headliner just as you would a stock one with the bows for support.
That's what I would do anyway for a custom headliner.
I am planning to do the same thing. I think the easiest way to do it will be to use thin ABS plastic sheets and screw them to the cross braces normally hidden by the headliner. The edges of the ABS can be shaped by heating with a heat gun and will hol dshape when cool. Then, like Brett said use the Super Trim adhesive to attach the foam to the ceiling, then trim your design in the foam, then coat with adhesive and put your fabric up. You want to make sure and use light fabric so it adheres well and doesn't sag. I should be tackling the same thing in a couple weeks.
One key thing in using the Super Trim Adhesive is to coat both surfaces, lightly but completely, and then let them tack up for maybe 5-10 min. (then make sure you get the alignment right or have room to trim) and then put the two sirfaces together.
Either way will work well. Let us know how it goes Drew... So Bjorn hasn't seen your car yet huh? One of these days...
Good luck Steve, let us know what you decide, and how it goes.
Bjorn's seen it a couple times......last time he saw it I believe it still had the Chevy 350 in it. He saw the 455 shortblock on the stand, but hasn't seen or heard it since I installed it and the new trans.
Ok... I see... I'm sure he'll catch up with you one of these days... maybe when all of you can get together for a groups cruise again? Sounds like a blast... especially now that you have the new motor in and all!
