i got a 2 inch system on my car with turbo mufflers and it sounds good.i eliminated the transverse muffler and ran straight duel exaust.if you want it loud you can try glass packs
check amesperf.com they sell flowmaster setup for firebird, they say it won't fit on a convertible but Rick told me if you put 1\2 inch spacers on the reinforcement pan it wiil work. check flowmaster site for tech help.
I have 2 straight pipes w glasspaks, not that loud , just a nice "rumble".....then comes to 2 72 model splits from T/A`s...I promise , its not that loud....friends of mine w other set ups ( flowmasters etc..)are louder... Bjorn 69 vert
i have hooker headers and 2 1/2 inch exhaust with flowmaster mufflers, its kind of loud but i hate these flowmaters and im gong to take them off and sell them, if you plan to get headers i would strongly reccamend what they have gotten the most hp out of, i choose hooker mufflers..
I agree with Steve, I have Hooker Super Comp's with 3" collectors into 2.5" pipes with a crossover that all goes under my "X" pan on my vert, (convertibles have an extrat bracing pan that bolts up to either side of the floor pan undernieth) now that is tight, but it works fine with no spacers and no vibrations. Into dual flowmasters that dump down before thr rear end.
If you go with headers, just make sure you spend the extra $50 or so to get the best quality. Not an item you'll want to replace often. And Mine, I've never had problems with having to retighten the bolt or anything. And get the coated if you can, even just aluminized, and you'll be set!
As far as the exhaust itself, you should be able to get 2.5" dual pipes back to dual mufflers and then have them run out to the back similar to stock routing with no problems. And get an "H" pipe or "X" pipe cross-over if you can...
Hey Brett are you running auto or 4sp.? Someone recently said that you have to lose the back up switch rod when you install the headers. Is that really the case or is there a way to get around it?
Hi Robert, I have a TH400, and on the 69's it's a slightly different story, then you'd run into some of that type of problem, as they have a different set up for the tranny, Locking ignition and all. But on the 67/68's you should be ok!
I too went with the Flowmaster "American Thunder" setup with Hooker comp headers on my 67 convertible. I used 1" spacing in the front, 1/2" in the middle and none on the back of the brace (with grade 8 bolts). I had to rotate the mufflers a little and dent them because they were rubbing agianst the front bolts on the factory traction bars.
I am probably going to go with Dynomax mufflers to make it quieter and hopefully fit a little better, oval not rect.
Another option, JCWhitney, had a stainless steel exhaust (w/o mufflers) for $159.
