I have a VIN of 223677U136708 and a Engine code of YT 522964...can someone please tell me if those are "matching" or "period correct"...I need a little education.
You need to look at the build date of the body and check and see if the casting dates(block/heads/ect.) are close. It's already period correct if it's an automatic car because it's a YT. You could claim numbers matching if the date is right on the block, heads, ect. Big difference in value.
It's different for an 8 than a 7. Only late 7's had vins. Early didn't so you only need correct dates and codes.
Greg, Your car can be considered numbers matching with the vin on the block. Some will be picky and want a few more original parts to say it's numbers matching. You, at least, have the major 'deal breaker' covered with the vin on the block. The heads are icing on the cake.
On 67 the engine unit number is 6 digits above the YT block code. You have to verify through PHS car billing history if the YT is numbers matching or numbers correct. Correct is the correct coded block and trans but not the one that originally came in the car.
As well, the dist should be 1111250 and carb 7027272. But the critical items are the block and trans. You can pick up a generic set of 670's in the correct date range as well as the dist. and carb.

I should have said that if you wanted to check without the PHS you could check the dates...... The right way is to get the PHS. I would check the dates before I ordered the PHS. But I'm cheap!
Just got off the phone with Jim Mattison from PHS..
Very interesting stories about the cowl tags, options and had a lot of answers to queries about production numbers codes and color distribution. After 70 minutes talking 67-9 only, I have to say I was geeked.
Can't wait to meet him this month. The PHS is great insurance and very valuable.

We talked about the First Gen "registry" and its' creator. The fact that 34% of all 67 Pontiacs produced were Verdoro green, The HF on the cowl tags and validity/correctness (lack thereof) The remaining RA, RA1 and RAII's. Build sheets, common problems with fraud/vins and retags.
I was at work and could talk for hours. I will be meeting him and Scott Tieman and maybe Dan Jensen in mid Feb. I will try and get as much info as I can regarding correct restoration colors, plating, nuts, bolts etc.
Jim offered me a some manuals that he will bring with him. I'll use this for everyone's enjoyment.

Jim also stated there are many errors seen throughout many GTO and Firebird cowl tags and the 3FH is just so. There are many errors he sees on low base models up to the RA models.
In essence, he states the cowl tag is not accurate in some cases and for it to not be considered so.

Sounded like some interesting stuff. Thanks. That's a lot of Verdoro.
When I was looking at getting my first car in late '68-69, I had mistakenly assumed that '67-68 Firebirds were ordered by the dealers in only about four main or primary colors and any others must be "special order". Between the commercials, mag ads and those I saw on the street, it "had" to be true.
I wish my former service mgr (Jack O`Brien) at the Volvo store ,he came from Leo Jarnagin Pontiac dealership in 80 and previously was district service rep for Pontiac in 62-72 had found his factory service books (like problem solving for warranty items etc)....I saw him last year, he said HAD them ,but now cant find those after his last two moves ....too bad ,would be a very nice 'find'...I`m still hoping though
and unfortunately at his age now ,he doesnt remember much of the stuff...I was hoping to pick his brain...
